I think we would all be better served acknowledging that people are allowed to (and almost always do) have complicated legacies. Pretending that anyone is all good or all bad serves no purpose and does not fit within a world where true justice (and abolition) is the goal.

Those harmed by the bad decisions that RBG joined need space to acknowledge that harm was real just as those whose rights were protected by a long legacy of incredible decisions should be able to celebrate that and fear what the loss of RBG may do to future decisions

We can, and should, demonize a system where the death of one person could cause so much harm without demonizing anyone that participated in said system. And we can, and should, fight to replace that system because it is flawed to its core.

RBG participated in a harmful system and indeed sometimes caused harm. She also participated in that system and helped to solidify the rights of so many. Both are true. At the same time. Nobody gets to nitpick which piece of her legacy to leave out or include.

I don’t have a clean way to end this other than to say mourn if you need to morn. Feel angry if you need to feel angry, but be truthful in your mourning and in your anger and when you’re done, get ready to organize and fight because I think we all agree this system ain’t it
