I think part of the reason why the death of someone like Kobe Bryant hits us so hard is that we spend much of our life hiding from the fact that we are mortal beings, and then something like this happens unexpectedly and forces us to acknowledge the terrible reality.

My son is 7 years old and he’s a cancer survivor. He was diagnosed at 18 months and fought for 2 years. He won.
That experience put my wife and I front and center with mortality.
Life is tenuous.
