We really do not know. We know he's working on it, we know when it's done he'll let everyone know, but when that will be, we could not say.

He should take as long as he needs. Season 8 especially (though there were big issues from season 5 onwards) shows that shoddy writing can destroy a series. I’m really looking forward to reading the real ending, going through the character rises and falls - via the pen of GRRM.

Surely by now he has written more than half the book. Why doesn't he release it in 2 parts like he did with other books in the series and we could get part 1 right now?

Martin said that the Winds will be more than 1000 pages.And of course the publisher will split it, just like ADance. The thing is, why George can't release part1 of the Winds which obviously he finished.And let us play with this share of the cake while he works on finishing part2
