By the same token there are alot of undiagnosed people, especially older people, and they’re not being flippant when they say that. They might not be diagnosed but they know what you’re talking about and they are on some spectrum.
Me: My kid's autistic and doesn't cope with extreme temps, so I really need my air con fixed.
Mechanic: I get that, I'm slightly autistic myself.
Me: No such thing as slightly autistic.
Mechanic: Oh I'm diagnosed. I downplay it because otherwise people think I can't do my job.

A good reminder of a reason people say “we’re all a little bit autistic” or “I’m slightly autistic myself” which isn’t just dismissal of autistic experience. Autistic people are forced to minimise themselves because of stigma.

Then there's, like, spectrum-adjacent folk like myself with my ADHD & other ND things. Like I probably don't quite meet the criteria but there's a definite overlap in relatable experiences between my bro (who's on the spectrum) & I, esp when we get going on a mutual sp. intetest.
