Here is an article that I wrote for the New Statesman. It details a bout of burnout I suffered last year. Before this I had doubts that burnout was an actual thing. I have no doubts now. I’m better now. My sense of responsibility is much tighter now.

@peteneville65 Can you explain what you mean by responsibility being tighter please?

@1choiceatatime Fair question. I mean that I cannot feel personally responsible for the state of healthcare overall. While I am a member of the NHS, I cannot take responsibility eg for the length of time people are waiting to see me, for the delay in getting them an Xray. That way madness lies.

@JackParryJones2 Thanks Jack. This was last year. I effectively CBTd myself and am very much back in action. But a real learning experience nonetheless. Love to you and your family.

@peteneville65 Looking back, I recognise a great deal of what you describe… I’ve since somehow found a zen-like peace by figuratively flipping a switch in my head as soon as I get in the car and not thinking about work unless I choose to.

@peteneville65 Most of us have been there one way or another. We won’t believe we can be broken until we are. Glad to hear you managed to deal with it. For those who need help and support there are many sources of help. For those in Wales @CanopiCymru is an amazing place to start.

@peteneville65 So much of what you say a speciality doctor did not cover wards but that meant I covered a lot of out patient clinics when people were off sick, extra clinics needed, ended up volunteering as some other colleagues felt "was picking and choosing 1/2 work"1/2

@AlresfordBear There is only so much I can talk about in a 5 minute interview mate. I'm a hospital consultant not a GP. Always best to stick to what you know when you are being interviewed on national TV. The GPs are perfectly capable of fighting their own battles. #hawthornekamila

@peteneville65 @BestForBritain It can happen to anyone. No one is one is invincible. The NHS requires urgent reform. Almost everything is now privatised - agency staff - equipment such as CAT scanners - the land hospitals sit on and the buildings all cost rent (privatised by Blair onwards) ££££££s

@peteneville65 Happy for your recovery and driving awareness. Any thoughts on what needs to change in society to not have to wait for people to experience it themselves to believe and advocate for it?

@peteneville65 This can happen to anyone. I didn’t understand it as a real concept until someone in my family experienced it in their first job. It happened before we’d realised and they became quite poorly for many months. I now look out for the warning signs.
