Treasury’s designation of Green Without Borders is key step in preventing Hezbollah fake enviro group from triggering real war.  But more needed: When UNIFIL peacekeeper mandate up for renewal Aug 31, US should insist it be strengthened to stop GWB from blocking border access. 2/

The U.S. should condition some of its hundreds of millions of dollars in annual assistance to the Lebanese government and armed forces on their removing all Green Without Borders outposts and other Hezbollah positions near the Israeli border. 3/

Hezbollah’s military presence anywhere in Lebanon is contrary to UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which calls for “the disarmament of all armed groups in Lebanon, so that . . . there will be no weapons or authority in Lebanon other than that of the Lebanese state.” 4/

Today’s sanctions on Hezbollah’s fake enviro group are an important step towards accountability for Hezbollah, but there is more to be done to hold Hezbollah accountable for both its abuses of the Lebanese people and the terrorist group’s continuing aggression toward Israel. 5/

The US should continue pushing for an independent and impartial investigation into Beirut port blast, three years ago this month, which killed over 220 people. A finding of Hezbollah responsibility could both achieve justice and erode the terrorist group’s power in Lebanon. 6/

The US should also increase sanctions pressure on Hezbollah, its incursions into Israel, its use of human shields & its missile procurement. In addition, US should impose sanctions on corrupt Lebanese officials who protect or otherwise assist Hezbollah.
