The academy has not come to terms with the fact that many incoming faculty/people on the job market are financially responsible for more than our nuclear families and that we don't come from wealth. Y'all need to pay upfront, not reimburse!

It’s such a pain. I wrote a long blog post after my first experience to help people prepare. Some schools have a small fund to allow for pre-pay. Please reach out to the deans and ask. I was happily surprised when I was told yes after asking.

Yea ... reimbursement makes huge assumptions about class that do not match the reality for many of us trying to get a leg up.

Yes! It’s a struggle. Reimbursement assumes that we have it in the first place. It hurts.

They have never come to terms with the need to pay for our labor, in the job search or once in the job (get asked to do things for free nearly every wk). As if.

Also: they pay up front travel expenses for who they want to. That’s the secret.

This isn't just academia, this is capitalism. It's the same in the private sector.

Piece of advice. If you are young and inexperienced you have to pay upfront to be upgraded. On the other hand, if you are mature and have experience you should value yourself away from family drama. Peace out.
