“There are some members who resigned from the cooperative like me.”
Even though we are in a consolidated (franchise), we don’t like what they did to us. From being a jeepney driver for 12 years,it was only the year 2022 when Carlos Deleos was able to afford his own jeepney unit.
He saved up for so many years by driving a truck, Grab and other private vehicles with the hope of managing his own time and earning more for his family.
He later found out that the unit he bought was already under a consolidated franchise. The previous owner said that they were told to sign a document without getting an explanation, in fact, there were several small operators who experienced similar situations in Batangas.
Carlos then realized the rottenness caused by the consolidation. He said, there are more expenses and loads of requirements for them.
Before, they used to earn Php 1,500 on good days, now it’s only Php 470 under a consolidated unit in 14 hours of work.
Lipa-Lemery has almost 250 units servicing thousands of Batangueños,this is a major route because it is accessible to a lot of municipalities and jeeps are the only transpo in the area. But when few units of minibus arrived and are in operation, they feel the threat of it already.
“The head of the cooperative was a previous police officer,” Carlos said. “When the consolidation was introduced, they threatened that you cannot register and operate, that’s why many were forced (to consolidate)”
They heard that others were served show cause order to force them to sign up. That’s why for Carlos, it is useless to extend the deadline until January 31 when it will just cause more fear and threat to jeepney drivers and operators.
