It’s official - Victoria council has unanimously declared Victoria as the CYLCING CAPITAL OF CANADA! We have the highest percentage of people that bike to work in Canada, a beautiful AAA bike network, free bike valet services, and beautiful weather and ocean-side trails.

In other news.... parents continue to have to sweep before their kids play because city council cares more about cycling than the safety of citizens.
@mattdellok
I’ll file this declaration under ‘well duh’.
In all seriousness we do have a great city with great weather and I’m glad the cyclists- those who can cycle - have the amenities and climate to take advantage of cycling year round.
@mattdellok
Great to see! Not only did the 2021 Census find that Victoria had the highest % of people cycling to work among 41 metro areas in Canada, it also had a higher cycling rate than all 246 metro areas in the U.S. in 2021.
Good infrastructure & compact land use makes a difference!
@mattdellok
"We have the highest percentage of people that bike to work in Canada" - and not just by a little. The chart below compares metro areas, so for Victoria that's everything from Sooke to Sidney. The cycling rate for the City of Victoria is even higher, at 9.6% in 2021.
@mattdellok
The bike infrastructure still needs to be better though. There are large swaths of Victoria that are not bike-able. Hillside and the Douglas street strode are examples. We also need to integrate bikes into public transportation better.
@mattdellok
According to the 2022 CRD Origin Destination Survey, Esquimalt had a higher % of residents cycling than Victoria did. We are going to have to demand an asterisk be placed on that title. :)

Meanwhile, due to Vancouver St. being blocked for bikes, we watched a fire truck with siren blaring stuck at Cook and Richardson the other day. Street work on Cook meant no one could move over. If only the fire truck could have used Vancouver St.! Glad my house wasn't on fire.
@mattdellok
What is interesting is that the % of people who bike to work in Victoria has dropped since 2006 (according to statscan) before the first bike lanes were even installed.

Fantastic!

👏👏👏
Let’s do Pedestrian safety next and get “No Cycling” painted on Pedestrian Only Songhees Walkway
I stopped trying to inform them because all I get is abuse so I started taking pictures 💁♀️

Meanwhile transit in the city cancels trip after trip do to maintenance on busses... I wonder how much of that is due to excess wear on them due to the poor conditions of the road infestructure
