I have a crazy idea - what if we build incredible amenities for kids in the centre of the city, to attract families back downtown?? Nice work Vancouver on the incredible “Rainbow Park” - we loved it!

Gotta clear out the streets and the parks
And decentralize social services
None of it belongs downtown
But you know this
What is crazy is the pretending the problem doesn't exist
The downtown you want is incompatible with the crime & addiction crisis we currently face

Omaha just did something similar with their Riverfront park. Massive capital investment. Two mega playgrounds, a new STEM museum, and other attractions. Truly transformative public space. I’m expecting it to pay off big time.
@mattdellok
The community’s been asking for that for 2 decades. Build a kid, senior & pet friendly downtown & it’ll be a thriving 24 hr core. Please finish the public engagement for

👍
Challenge now is we first need to fix the public safety crisis. Amenities won’t solve it
@mattdellok
Two most common reasons why people say they don't go downtown anymore:
1. Safety &
2. Parking
Attractions won't bring people downtown. Get off Twitter & start listening to people outside of your bubble.
@mattdellok
You said it yourself, it's a crazy idea. Please. Stop. No more vanity projects whose only conceivable purpose is to displace homeless people in the middle of a housing crisis. While in Vancouver you should have looked at the DTES instead of the "Rainbow Park" for inspiration.
@mattdellok
Well Matt I don’t think kids like playing in kitty litter! Because that’s the solution from
@myDVBA
for dealing with the smell of human feces and urine. You must get DT after the water trucks come through and spray down the sidewalks. Great use of water BTW!
@mattdellok
The project was completed over budget at $17.9 million and a $500K in annual maintenance(?). Funded mostly through the CAC from developers (yikes). Good luck selling that.
@mattdellok
I don’t understand why the focus is so much on getting people back to down town, when there’re many major infrastructure changes the downtown core needs to accommodate heavy traffic in an already congested zone.. the previous council didn’t help in that regard..
