There's a lot to be said about California housing being unaffordable and ridiculously expensive, but the reason houses are *so cheap* in states like Arkansas, Indiana, and Alabama is because people just don't want to live there.

It seems very hard to believe, but there really are a lot of people who would rather live in an apartment in California than a house in Mississippi. I have my own opinions on it, but I'll leave it to others to think about why.

@lxeagle17 This is cheap? Even if this "house" was affordable, this isn't my cup of tea.

@Kristi_4_Toledo think about it — if a mansion that luxurious costs 1.1M (which is less than a standard single-family home costs in much of San Jose, California), what do you think a regular house costs?

@JoshfromAR I don't think people are inclined to move to states overwhelmingly of the opposite partisanship just to try and make it competitive one day.

@lxeagle17 I lived in LR for almost a year. 2 people with combined income of 100k are home owners if they save. In SF they live in poverty.

@lxeagle17 There’s also a tiny cross-section of people who can afford to own a $1.1M house in Arkansas while working there permanently.

@lxeagle17 True. People would rather be homeless on the street or step over homeless to get out of their homes than lead a decent life somewhere they know nothing about.

@lxeagle17 I mean the median price of a home in Bakersfield or Fresno is below the national average…

@lxeagle17 I'd much rather live in a 600 sq ft apartment in CA, even in Bakersfield or Fresno, than in a 6000 sq ft house anywhere in Arkansas.

@lxeagle17 I mean… the number of leaving the state is a pretty good indicator that people would indeed prefer to live elsewhere for cheaper.

@lxeagle17 Real estate investors have turned homeownership into a Ponzi scheme in some places. I bought my first house 5 years ago and somehow it's almost doubled in value. In 5 years. I couldn't afford it if I bought it now.

@lxeagle17 not really true, at least not in this locality. there are plenty of (mostly) small towns in interior states where the existing housing stock exceeds demand, but in somewhere like little rock, prices will be limited by the construction costs of a comparable new build...

@lxeagle17 Liking where you live is similar to one’s taste in movies or music. It’s subjective, people can find joy anywhere and it’s not my place to have an opinion on what brings you happiness.
