hey uh a general reminder to able-bodied ppl to not use terms like “crippling depression” or “crippling anxiety” as it’s literally derived from a slur for phys disabled ppl !!
i’ve seen it multiple times this past week so just pls be aware of this !!!! /srs
@levi_florins
yea ofc !! and it’s not commonly known even among ppl who’s first language is english so no worries !! just trying to bring more awareness !!
@conejite_bosque
i mean i personally wouldnt use it at all like that no matter who it is, but it’s up to you ig since you are phys disabled. it’s just that the word “cripple” has a lot more nuance, yknow?
@kazlvjy
Wait how is it bad? /genq, ik you said it comes from a slur but I thought that this was like a normal saying? (I don’t say it but I’ve heard people say ‘crippling anxiety’ before)
@kazlvjy
Some mental illnesses are literally crippling though like when I was at the lowest point of my depression I physically could not walk or stand up it was horrible
@17jaeouni
hi i’ve been through that personally, a word you can use is “debilitating” or “disabling” bc “crippling” is derived from a slur for physically disabled ppl specifically/nm
@kazlvjy
so how are we to refer to depression/anxiety/other mental conditions that are crippling, either to ourselves or other people? and may i ask how exactly it was derived from a slur?
@kazlvjy
I genuinely thought this phrase was just meant for people with anxiety or depression that stop them from being able to live properly, like when you're too anxious or depressed to take care of yourself for months at a time, thank you for teaching!!!
@kazlvjy
this is me finding out that it’s not “crumpling” that’s so awful will definitely being using a more decipherable alternative and talking to my able bodied friends about not using it!! so sorry you all have to expirience sorts of casual ableism :((
