It is estimated that over 90% of undocumented migrants (PATI) came to Malaysia via regular channels. Forced labour, human trafficking, corrupt practices by public servants, abuse by employers & agents, poor enforcement of labour laws etc. force them into undocumented status.

We should use the term Undocumented or Irregular migrants as it is more humane. The term “illegal migrant” is also misleading as it doesn’t do justice to the migrant in terms of hinting how they became “illegal”. Hence the authorities & media love to overuse the term to mislead.

Those of you volunteering, do have empathy towards the migrants. Not all are digital literate or understand how the vaccination process works or even how to fill forms. It is the duty of the GOVT to make sure instructions are in languages understood by ALL.This did NOT happen.

Malaysia has removed health care subsidies for migrants, will sack/deport a migrant if he/she is HIV+,will report undocumented migrants who seek public health care to authorities.....the list is long. We have to reverse this.

The framing of “treating foreigners taking resources away from citizens” in the context of undocumented immigrants is not just inaccurate but also harmful. In healthcare we don’t look at resources as a zero sum game. 1/n

It's not hard to predict that Malaysia’s trajectory over the following years to come is pretty much straight down the drain. This will lead to a phenomenon where ppl have no choice but to leave & is called “forced migration”. Just pray the place you land treats you with dignity.

I am shocked at the speed of such legislation. Who lobbied for this? Migrant rights groups have been barking for 30 years++ to protect domestic workers in Malaysia. Till today they are excluded from so many articles/protections in the labour laws. What kind of democracy are we?
