My daughter told me she thinks blonde girls w blue eyes are more beautiful than her. 😭😭 It breaks my heart bc that’s how I felt when I was a kid. 💔I’m working as fast as I can to try & change that in the book world, but when are we gonna get more rep in children’s movies+TV?
@kellyyanghk
As a Caucasian, brown eyed brunette, I sadly felt the same way as a kid. My mom loved the Samantha Pleasant Company doll since it looked like me, but I adorned the Kirsten doll because it wasn’t me.
@EducatorWilcox
I think it’s about more than that though, I recently overheard my oldest telling his friends he’s 25% Chinese. I’m like how are you 25% Chinese?! Like how’s that math possible????😂😭

In 1980 kindergarten blond hair was 100% the coveted standard of beauty. Then a family from Japan moved to our school & the girl and I became pretty good friends. I spent the remainder of my childhood wishing fervently for straight black hair. So yeah, exposure is so important!
@kellyyanghk
I was moved and perturbed by this tweet. I can only imagine how hard it was for you to hear. Are you consciously looking out now for kids' movies and programs to show her? For example, do you plan to have her watch "Abominable"?
@kellyyanghk
My girls are mixed race & they don’t feel this at all. Thankfully social media throws images 2 them of beautiful black women with dark hair, big bumpers (not stick thin barbie bodies). Can u try to expose your daughter to some different beauty ideals 🤷♂️ These days it’s not so ltd

@renarossner
My blonde blue eyed daughters wish desperately that they had some ethnicity. They think Asian, black and Mexican girls are so much prettier.
@kellyyanghk
My daughter cried when she was little because she didn’t have blonde hair and blue eyes. It has taken her years to understand how beautiful she is by not being blonde!
@kellyyanghk
Yes blonde/blue eyed dreamer here too! I *almost* got blue contacts. (It would’ve been a weird look lol). It’s getting better but I think to a certain extent we’ll always want what we don’t have...
@kellyyanghk
Racism is propagated through symbols.
It is these symbols that teach us to hate our self even if no one tells us we are worth less. The amazing minds of a child can interpret these symbols to understand the truth of the world we say has "progressed".
@kellyyanghk
That’s heartbreaking. I teach my children that they should be proud of their uniqueness and we read a wide variety of books. Unfortunately, they still hear about others’ definition of beauty, which connects to looks. 😞 We have to just keep trying to change that perspective.
@kellyyanghk
Oh, no!! 😢 When I was a platinum blonde child, I wanted raven black hair. I don't know why. How do we teach children to love who they are?
