Just your regular reminder that Stockholm Syndrome is just a theory and it was created about a female hostage by a male psychiatrist who didn't even know her in order to explain away her testimony of police incompetence in extracting her

@kattenbarge I’d be careful with the use of the word “theory” when on scientific topics

@kattenbarge It's so messed up how the narrative gets skewed sometimes, especially when it's just some dude tryna save face or protect his own. Like, "Oh, she must have fallen for her kidnapper 'cause she said we messed up?" Bruh, maybe y'all just dropped the ball! It's always easier to blame…

@kattenbarge By saying this, you are denying that trauma bonds exist with abused children and their parents or adult survivors of childhood abuse, as well as women or men that are abused in relationships. Trauma bonds are the same as Stockholm Syndrome, it is just another name. Symptoms of…

@kattenbarge It’s more like a pseudo-scientific explanation to damage a victim’s credibility and undercut her legitimate critique of police incompetence than an actual theory. Few of us are likely to understand it’s origin story, many of us are likely to think that we know what it means 1/

@kattenbarge Jaycee Dugard, Elizabeth Smart and other victims all hate the concept of SS, they went along with their captors because they were horrifically abused and doing what they needed to do to protect themselves/their children, they did NOT love or feel sympathy for their kidnappers!

@kattenbarge The way I've tried explaining this story to my sister multiple times with sources and she just refuses to believe me because she "studied psychology in college" in like 2004. Psychology has advanced so much since then, anyway! I just feel crazy talking to her about anything.

@kattenbarge I keep finding out the shit we were told is a fabrication and it’s less infuriating than finding out that it was done maliciously by terrible folks.

@kattenbarge Relatedly, the Kitty Genovese phenomenon was based off a news article that was intentionally fictionalized and sensationalized! In reality several people tried to help her and intervened, she even died in one of their arms
