I wish we had a free market. Unfortunately we have a semi-socialist crony capitalist system where Big Government and Big Interests line each other's pockets.
@mollytect
Leftists think that if you raise the price of cigarettes people demand fewer cigarettes (or soda). But for wages they don't. Why? If you make a job that paid $10/hr now $15/hr, people will - logically - demand less of that labor. By your OWN logic.
@mollytect
It isn't theft if you're simply letting people keep more of their own money. Government doesn't have a dime of its own. Every cent it has it took from someone.
@mollytect
If you paint a house you can pay one guy $80 or four people $20. Paying those four $20 isn't exploitation if all parties agree! (For those four people who aren't as efficient as the one guy, that's how they compete with him. Econ 101.
@mollytect
If government can decree wages, why stop at $15? Why not $50? Why not $100? If your theory is correct that the government bureaucrat knows better than the business owner what the wage "should" be and can make that happen.
@mollytect
Do you really believe that about pay and unions? If unions made workers richer, why aren't countries like Venezuela, highly unionized, richer? Why weren't the communist countries rich?
@mollytect
No. It was capitalists putting profits back into productivity and tech that made the workers richer. The reason that German or American workers are wealthier than those in Zimbabwe is not because of unionization. It's because of capitalism.
@mollytect
People do that all the time- pay more for products. But it's because the products are good, not because some government bureaucrat forces them to.
@mollytect
I hope you realize that if you make $25 + the company makes $90, the other $75 goes into things like rent, property tax, pension benefits, corporate taxes, marketing, paper, IT, etc. The capitalist (shareholder) is the last to he paid, after everyone else.
@mollytect
The goal of capitalism isn't employment or making things expensive. It is the opposite. The reason we are all so wealthy relative to other people in other times is because our ancestors put capitalist profits into worker productivity and also drove up efficiency.
@mollytect
What you describe is how our medical system works: special interests product doctor and clinic markets, driving up salaries and "making the job worth it," as you put it. It's the reason prices are skyrocketing for the patients.
@mollytect
That is because of government. Zoning makes housing more expensive. Government protections of doctors and Big Pharma mean we all pay more. In a true free market prices fall.
@mollytect
I agree with that last part. The goal of economy is not to make things more expensive, but to make things as efficient as possible. That's why everyone wants to retire early.
