I guess this whole debacle is a reminder that there is nothing special about us, the humans of crypto. For all the values we profess, we’re as greedy and reckless as generations past.
What differs is the tools we’re building.
Let’s face it. We are not different than other humans, past and present. When faced with the opportunity to grab the cash and run ,we’re as likely as anyone to do it.
Greed is like a siren’s call. Impossible to resist.
What’s different about crypto is that we are building the tools to stop us from following that instinct
Like Ulysses, we’re moulding the wax to prevent us from following the sirens, when the time inevitably comes and their songs of success and fortune become irresistible
But we want to take shortcuts and scale our industry faster, and so we start believing that we have, collectively, higher integrity than others. We rely on trust again.
We follow white knights and demi gods who rode the wave of success. Most of them eventually disappoint and rug
Crypto is about accepting our shortcomings as human beings and figuring out clever ways to overcome them.
Not based on the trust we attribute to individuals, beliefs or social mechanisms. Based on a universal language that doesn’t depend on humans. Maths.
Don’t trust, verify.
