Playing,coaching,leading over the years at Saracens,Quins,Melbourne Storm,GRR/Western Force & now Fijian Drua.”Unholy Union” with M.Aylwin.Personal account.
Yet there are some still claiming that Leave leaders never said this sort of thing pre-referendum.Many of them are convinced it was never said .Cognitive dissonance of the highest order .
Eddie Butler is dead.That hits home hard.Remember him at Monmouth School,Cambridge & his beloved Pooler as well as Wales.Hard as nails,meted out his own justice,highly educated,great linguist & outstanding broadcaster. One of the brightest and best.Very hard to take in. So young.
Probably the worst day in the history of Premiership Rugby. Other clubs have gone into administration but they were “simple” business failures.These happen in all sectors.But Worcester were sunk by a complete failure of oversight and the lack of the most basic due diligence.
Just travelling back from

at Twickenham and apart from a great game some things strike me about the crowd compared to an England international game. Much younger,far more women (of all ages) and loads more young children. Really encouraging.
So now we have a player’s wife insinuating that a referee took a bribe. This is why
@rassierugby
actions are so poisonous.His actions poison the well & give a green light to wild conspiracy theories & paranoia.When you’ve a platform you’ve a moral obligation to exercise restraint
Read a lot about the unlevel playing field this weekend.Budgets etc but Leinster have 4 non Irish qualified players in their Squad.Toulouse have 10. La Rochelle 12.Leicester Tigers have 15.Exeter have 17. Maybe it’s not just money maybe it’s also poorer development in England?
Well it wasn’t to be but that was a great World Cup campaign by the Flying Fijians. But it is only the beginning . I truly believe a great rugby nation is on the rise.
I played for 20 years from the age of 10.From the start,even at a young age,I loved the game but realised it had an element of risk. It was physical, it could be a bit scary,you got hurt at times.But I always enjoyed activities where there was some physical challenge so (1/4)..
At the very least the RFU should initiate an independent enquiry and publish the report in full. This isn’t Richmond or London Welsh or possibly Wasps - upsetting though they were.This is far far worse and far more serious. I’m not holding my breath.
Lots of Twitter comments regarding how best to support emerging rugby nations.From my experience in Fiji (& small amounts of work in Georgia, Portugal,Netherlands & Roumania) first point I’d make is that they need different things because the cultures & stage of development (1/6)
This is the most detailed and forensic account of the collapse of the club I’ve read . It’s not pretty. Worcester Warriors: the inside story of a rugby club’s demise | Michael Aylwin
Some commentary on Rugby Twitter regarding Italy and the structure in NH generally is just insane.Anyone playing attention to rugby consistently and not just watching RWC knows that Italy have made huge strides in the past 5 years. One disastrous game doesn’t negate that.
Riders come off horses,boxers get punched,skiers lose control, mountaineers fall off cliff faces, cyclists,racing drivers & motorcyclists crash-sometimes with fatal consequences.None of these sports seem to agonise about risk the way rugby seems to be doing currently.Why is that?
Two points from England v Wales . How Nick Tompkins wasn’t MoM is a complete mystery. Eddie Jones’ comments regarding the referee and the shoulder charge were completely inaccurate and unacceptable.
How could a man banned from being a trainee solicitor remain as owner of a Premiership club? How could a network of loans and companies be set up - all on the public record - and no action be taken?Where were PRL & RFU? Who within DCMS sanctioned this?Why were the media so quiet?
If Daily Mail is to be believed ( and to be fair it’s rugby coverage is decent) then four clubs still want to put the salary cap up ; but at one and the same time want the government to freeze their outstanding loans. It’s just an extraordinarily entitled and ridiculous position
One of the many beautiful things about Fijian rugby is the wonderful singing in harmony at various times be it before training , before or after a game or at a function.

I really find Premiership games,in which one team is at full strength playing another which is basically a second string team, incredibly dull to watch. Am I alone ?
One of many reasons I’m so opposed to use of eight substitutes (stops the game,means less aerobic fitness needed etc) is that it’s another huge advantage to those countries with deeper player pools. Makes a hard task for likes of Georgia,Italy,Japan even harder.Reduce number ASAP
The case for
@FlyingFijians
to be fast tracked into the Rugby Championship is getting stronger and stronger. No team in the world would find the trip to Suva or Lautoka straightforward.
Call me old fashioned but I still believe in evidence based decision making. So if the game I love is making fundamental changes,which might possibly have huge repercussions,I’d like to see the evidence laid out.Particularly since most of the research I have read (1)
I’m not at all sure a single current English rugby union player can be defined as “world class”(if the definition is being one of the two best players in their position)Honestly can’t think of a single one.Perhaps more important in explaining recent form rather than coaches?
So Bristol Bears follow a 25 year Premier Rugby tradition whereby the dominant financial team of each particular era go public & support a higher salary cap in the name of “ambition”when they are one of a few clubs who can finance it.Preceded by Leicester,Sale, Saracens & Bath.
Elite sport is a harsh environment and the truth is that once Marler and Cole went off the England scrum was under pressure which led to penalties and points. Overall it wasn’t easy on the eye but they nearly pulled off a tactical masterclass.
Most extraordinary training session I have ever witnessed.6am Sigatoka Sands followed by the Fijian waterhole ice bath. As the mists burned off in the early morning sun it was brutal & beautiful at one and the same time.
I’m well aware this observation may make me out to be ridiculously old fashioned and sentimental; but I really think the way Lions now regularly play weakened provincial teams in NZ, SA & Aust really diminishes the whole concept.
All four quarter finals go down to the wire. It was largely down to the quirky draw but it was a magnificent weekend that showcased the sport. Can’t recall another RWC weekend to match it.Could easily be Ireland,Fiji, France and Wales in the semis.That has to be good for the game
The rugby in the Premiership excellent again this weekend (with Quins and Saints to come -might need an abacus) it’s worrying to see the crowds at Newcastle, Sale,London Irish & even to a degree Saracens (wasn’t full for the replay of the final).Product great but something wrong.
In the next few years they burnt through the CVC money, torched the taxpayers money from DCMS, created multiple companies to move assets around, paid themselves handsome salaries and to top it all borrowed money from an elderly Cecil Duckworth. Where was the due diligence?
You’ll never completely eliminate head clashes. In the same way as you’ll never eliminate knee to head collisions(see Aust v Georgia) Systematically using red cards &bans to look like you’re doing something is just virtue signalling and/or PR. At pro level reducing contact (1/3)
If Owen Farrell plays in France how is that deemed to be anymore of a crisis in English Rugby than Dan Carter doing the same was a disaster for NZ rugby? It’s just a non issue compared to all the other things that really do need some serious attention
Back in 2018 the club was sold to a group who could only raise the funds by selling & leasing back the stadium.Effectively they bought the club with its own assets.They were not asked to show proof of funds despite Worcester(like many clubs) consistently losing significant money
The Smith Farrell concept does not work. Pick one or other. Then they do all the placekicking, restarts, run the offence etc. Mind you if you get out-scrummaged, lose the aerial battle as well as most of the collisions it won’t be anywhere near enough to make much difference
Rugby is a complex game open to many interpretations yet Twitter awash with people heavily criticising the referee after a 40pt margin.Large % seem to be South African.I think I preferred it when people moaned about the ref in the pub & you didn’t hear too much of it all.
Which bit of the fact that PRL clubs are not governed by the RFU does huge swathes of rugby Twitter not actually get ? The people who could have changed the model were the clubs themselves
People talking about a lack of revenue but a glance at the data re. PRL since 1996 shows that is complete nonsense. Revenue growth has been more than respectable (over 400% in the period).It’s the lack of regulatory control of costs & poor governance structures that are the issue
I hope I’m not being hopelessly optimistic but the consistent improvement of Italy U20 results in recent years ( one point loss to France yesterday ) is very encouraging
Next time you hear someone say” but how do we compete with the French clubs?”say”not by raising costs that we can’t finance in the long run.They have a bigger market so their broadcast revenues & therefore budgets will be higher.We should focus on better player development..(1/2)
Whatever the reasons the game can’t afford too many games like last weekend. It’s a sport that is a running & handling game at heart- other aspects are important but the soul of the game requires an element of passing & movement.Less than 300m made ball in hand is not rugby.
Just catching up on ENGvFRA(12 hrs ahead here & hey we celebrated beating the Crusaders).One thing crystal clear.If not a single English forward makes the composite team it makes no difference who plays elsewhere. Outscrummed,out tackled,out rucked. No power anywhere up front
The NRL broadcast deal is around £225m annually.The salary cap per team is £6.4M.Which is roughly the level the PRL cap is meant to rise to next year(actual player spend will be higher due to allowances)The annual broadcast revenue of RFU & PRL combined is £80M.See the issue ?
Short thread.If 4/6 defeats by Italy U20 in most recent encounters & yesterday’s mauling by France U20s don’t make people realise the key issues in Welsh rugby are far deeper than the number of regional clubs,the level of the salary cap, governance … 1/4
adults.Those of us who play/ed the game want an element of risk.We knew & know there’s a small chance of a catastrophic injury in the short run or long term damage. By all means make adjustments but don’t seek total eradication of risk. It’s one of the reasons we love/d it (4/4)
(1) In case we think it’s impossible to run a league in a sustainable fashion the NRL has announced that last year it turned over $AD570M with a $42.8M profit,saw all 16 clubs turn a profit (for the first time;just 5 years ago they collectively lost $60M)cap is $11M next year.
Rassie Erasmus will feel vindicated by subsequent events.That’s why it’s so important there are significant consequences.Otherwise you have the situation where any competitive coach will think it’s open season & every game will be stop-start & officials petrified to make an error
No French at all from Matthew Cardyv. They’re full time . If you have ambition to officiate at the top level it should be non negotiable. Put some time into developing some French rugby vocabulary
I just hate the driving mail from 5 metres out . It makes a mockery of the basic central tenet of the sport - which is a contest for possession between attack and defence . It’s obstruction every time and distorts the whole game.
So what has altered in 3 years to lead to the changes recently announced?
RFU tackle height trial ended after concussions rise in Championship Cup - BBC Sport
Eighteen Drua players selected for the Flying Fijian RWC squad. Congratulations to each and every one of them.We’ve come a long way in two seasons but still have much further to go.

The making of this mess lies with a group of MPs who think they have the right to interpret a marginal vote in favour is all variants of Leave as a mandate to promote and pursue a potentially disastrous extreme experiment in disaster capitalism with no supportive data or evidence
This scrum in the
@GLOSvBRIS
around the 50 minute mark has taken nearly 2 minutes to complete and ended in a penalty. I’m sorry that’s completely unacceptable.
Went to the Stoop to watch
#QUINSvBRIS
last night. It turned out to be an occasion which showcased how the game we love should be played & presented. Full house,noisy,really good game presentation,wonderful match played with pace, skill & edge.Wish it was on FTA television.
It’s completely &utterly irrelevant whether
@RassieRugby
has one,several or many valid points. You can’t ignore one of the game’s elite coaches publicly trashing the behaviours & decision making of officials.The situation requires a serious sanction & tightening of protocols
Where do those simultaneously clamouring for more funding from RFU for the second tier &more money from RFU to keep the very best English players in the Premiership & more funding from RFU to make the Premiership clubs solvent think all this incremental income is coming from?
@PaulKirkby3
This was not a news or current affairs show hence impartiality guidelines do not ( and need not)apply . It’s not that complicated or new. Unless of course you’re searching for anything to feed into your anti BBC agenda.
This is what Welsh rugby at all levels should be concentrating on above all else.The pathways & age group set ups from 14-21 have been poor for a fair few years & it’s not all about money. It’s also about getting development systems,coaching &alignment right &that’s about people
🏴vs🇮🇹 U18 6N
8-29 Final score
The Italian age grade once again showing positive signs for the future, beating Wales away from home, running in 5 tries to 1. Some talent coming through just need to keep improving our talent pool.

I willingly accepted the risks. As I got older I witnessed some serious injuries &realised it might have been me but I didn’t stop playing (or boxing a bit or ski-ing).I worry we are seeking to eliminate risk in many areas of life. All the research showing we are destroying (2/4)
Well you have to admire the way Quins throw on very young players to replace icons ( Care, Dombrandt, Marler, Louw) in a tight game they should have already won but had lost momentum.Speaks volumes about their confidence in the emerging talent
What Georgia need now is regular games in July and November against strong opposition . With the rugby infrastructure programme they have planned for the next decade they will only improve still further.
How about this?Replace current water boys with one minute break at 20 mins but only if temperature over 25 degrees centigrade.Otherwise wait until half time or when you’re behind the posts.Nobody from either coaching staff allowed on pitch or be miked up to the medical staff
I’ve watched the game back a couple of times and although thrilled at the result it should be said that the
@FlyingFijians
didn’t play close to their best. Loads to work on in line out, handling and shape but very solid in scrum , defence, goal kicking and finishing
.. more team cohesion and tactical innovation” England’s competitive advantage is the size of its player pool. More players than any other country. Concentrate on that not inflating salaries of players, coaches and administrators. (2/2)
With laws as they are it’s possibly a red card.But this system is doing nothing to tackle the real problem (multiple sub concussive contacts) it’s simply trying to create a better optic by reducing direct head tackles. It’s having too big an impact on too many games & commentary
Just screaming for promotion & relegation into 6N or TRC is not the best way forward unless the particular country is ready with the base elements outlined above in place and established. It’s a time consuming & difficult process but it works (6/6)
If you’re watching BRIS v BATH that intervention by the TMO is exactly what we need to get rid of . If the referee and touch judge are OK with the challenge at the restart just play on . The game stops and starts too much unnecessarily
Demise of Jersey is very sad but way too simplistic to simply blame the RFU. You need to have access to their books &ownership structure b4 judging & allocating blame.Even two govt grants weren’t enough to keep the lights on.But you can say the club rugby business model is broken
Knowing the Fijian coaching team well they will already be working on the things that can still be improved.The line out still a work in progress & our conversion of try scoring chances is too low. But huge strides in the scrum,the breakdown,discipline & kicking.Toso Viti.
It’s extremely rare that any rugby player goes out to hit another players head with their own head. It would be ridiculous & self destructive. Yet we ban players for actions over which they don’t have complete control & will inevitably happen at times. Sending off sufficient
Really interesting I found the
#IREvSA
game fascinating but my adult children who all like/love the game thought it was a dull game albeit with a great atmosphere ( too many stoppages, not enough flow, too much crash bang) In microcosm that might be the issue the game is facing?
I despair that as a sport we keep tinkering when what’s needed is a package of interrelated changes which reinforce each other eg.a closed Prem & Div 1,max squad size in Prem, abolition of Prem Cup & Shield & A League, fewer games,lower salary cap, subsidised Div 1, feeder teams.
If you’re interested in listening to a piece where I try to pull most,if not all,the threads together;which I think rugby needs to do to grow.Then this is probably the one I would point you to. I’m afraid it’s long but there are many linked factors at play
