Everyone wants a blue check but not everyone realizes how much goes into the policy behind them. There isnā€™t a one size fits all version of what it means to be ā€˜verifiedā€™ on Twitter. This made designing the request experience especially tough.

Our team had 3 main objectives: 1ļøāƒ£ Educate people on our new policy so itā€™s clear whether or not they qualify 2ļøāƒ£ Reduce the submission of unqualified applications 3ļøāƒ£ Automate the process to scale so that requests are reviewed quickly

I had a hard time balancing these priorities against what I originally thought the solution should look like. Initially, I envisioned a single screen with a generic set of input fields. It was clean and consistent but it was setting applicants up to fail.

What did setting people up to fail look like? Relying on them to: 1ļøāƒ£ Redirect themselves to the policy 2ļøāƒ£ Read it in full 3ļøāƒ£ Understand what to provide We also explored dynamically inserting the policy requirements as plain text, but that still relied on 2ļøāƒ£ and 3ļøāƒ£ .

Our final direction is a hyper-tailored flow. It brings the policy into the product in a way that educates and guides applicants based on who they are and the information they provide.

This project helped me learn that ā€˜simpleā€™ and ā€˜straightforwardā€™ doesnā€™t always mean fewer steps or fewer screens. And while there are definitely exceptions, setting people up to fail usually means the designs failed too.
