This story is shocking. Not only for Liddle's intentionally upsetting remarks but those of the head of the college who invited him to come and say all this hateful stuff at a Christmas bloody dinner. And then calls his students "pathetic." What a nasty man.

Videos of interactions afterwards beggar belief. Students are expressing how distressed they are with the situation & get totally shut down by Luckhurst - a man responsible for their welfare. "Speech does not cause pain", he says. Appalling, @durham_uni .

Durham issues a mealy-mouthed statement & is 'investigating'. Probable nothing will come of it, esp. in light of the govt's Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Bill. But one thing is certain: @durham_uni & @South_CollegeDU 's reputation is badly damaged.

One point to emphasise: at collegiate uni's, the college is literally your home. A close-knit community of young people with a few staff whose primary responsibility is the welfare of students. For a head of college to cause distress to students in their home is beyond the pale.

@edanderson101 What really gets me is… what principal wants THIS to be how the college’s Christmas dinner is remembered?

@TomABacon Absolutely. The whole thing is bizarre. Students save up for a special, festive dinner with their mates that they are looking forward to, only to be bombarded with the horrible opinions of a cantankerous old fart. Just a very weird thing to do.

@edanderson101 The principal’s wife is also saying insulting stuff about the students on Twitter, not a great look tbh

@edanderson101 The idea seems still to hold that places like Durham are ‘prestigious universities’: high table - that idea alone is risibly offensive. Lack of Any basic grasp of EDI : not surprising. Deliberately inviting your provocative mate : disgusting and weird.

@edanderson101 The more you read through the article, the more obvious it becomes that Luckhurst really is a nasty person and shouldn't hold that position of responsibility. Hopefully, this'll blow up and he'll be removed.

@edanderson101 Principal who invited Liddle is, of course, a History Reclaimed groupie. Absolutely pathetic that these guys continue to peddle prejudice and hate under the guise of 'free speech', and then get a column out of it

I was always lead to believe that South College was going to be a more liberal and accepting college, with the motto ‘liberty, equality and global citizenship’ you’d think you’d be safe from adversity. Tonight proved otherwise.

@edanderson101 'Liddle started his speech saying he was disappointed to not see any sex workers that night, in reference to recent controversy over safety training provided by Durham University to student sex workers.' Good God
