“Love Jihad” is an utterly stupid term that instantly discredits anyone who uses it as fundamentally unserious. Not possible to have a genuine (and important) conversation about radical strains of Islam with people who spout such nonsense.

The concept of 'Love Jihad' and the idea that is exists not as isolated romantic liaisons that cross vthe Hindu-Muslim divide but as an organised strategy involving the entire community, is dearly held by the bigots of Hindutva. It is the oxygen that fans their hate.

Many terms like this exist: it’s a phenomenon known as simplifying language. “Religiously-motivated illicit conversions” is hard to fit on a front page, you see?
