Arradondo: "If anyone can look me in the eyes and say that intersection is contributing to peace and safety... we have a problem". The briefing has ended.
Minneapolis Police Chief Arradondo speaking to the media. Says 38th/Chicago "must be re-opened". He's joined by United States Attorney Anders Folk, ATF Special Agent in Charge along with Hennepin County Sheriff Hutchinson.
"We will bring every tool and resource ATF has available." Special Agent in Charge of the FBI office says they stand in solidarity with their partners and pledging their support while "leveraging their task force and intelligence resources" to hold folks accountable.
Arradondo says Mayor Frey has been briefed daily on things. When asked what the community should expect to see going forward he says there will be more visibility in the area by law enforcement. "Continued on-going investigations" with people brought to justice and prosecutions.
Arradondo: "Its not a matter of when. It will be forthcoming" when referring to when 38/Chicago would be "re-opened". Says they will be utilizing "technology". Unsure what that means.
Asked if the intersection will open to vehicle traffic before trial ends Arradondo says "We as a collective leadership, we will make the plans on the best information and intelligence and safe for all. We will dictate that timing and not let the trial dictate that".
Arradondo is asked if there has been a policy to "stay away". He says there's not a policy. However, scanner audio from Friday has what appeared to be a MPD supervisor telling officers not to enter.
Minneapolis spokesperson (formerly Minneapolis Police spokesperson until that position was eliminated and he moved from PD to city) tells CourtTV “Our officers have responded in that area. Our officers have patrolled in that area. I don’t even know what an autonomous zone is.”
