Vartan Gregorian was an icon in higher education and philanthropy—and a giant in my life. He was a consummate connector, a link in the chain from each of us to the other, and from the past to the future. He will be deeply missed.

Oh no! I met him when he was president at Brown. What a mind and heart! And a world class hugger. This hurts. My deepest condolences to you and all who knew him. What a lion of a person.
