Poking my head up from vacation while heading home from camping, here’s what seems new in the Liberal’s climate announcement today #Elxn44 1/n

2. It’s kind of obscure in the backgrounder but it appears they would cap O&G GHGs at current levels & give the sector a declining carbon budget in 5 year

3. This is new and likely very good (depending on the TBD carbon budgets). It cleverly calls the oil companies’ bluff on claims of climate leadership / net zero commitments by making their aspirations (that I don’t believe for a minute) a legislated requirement

4. A key devil-in-the-detail is whether the cap is about creating a framework for the shift to renewable energy or cover for false solutions like CCS which don’t address downstream emissions while extending life of fossil fuels.

5. Also new is the shift from a zero emission aspiration for 2040 to a promise of a legislated requirement for 50% of new vehicles to be zero emission by 2030 & 100% by 2035. Sends clear signal to auto companies to get cracking (and build them here).

At @GreenpeaceCA we’d like to see this happen faster but the shift away from voluntary targets to requirements is big.

6. Also new: Clean Electricity Standard of net-zero by 2035 (they’ll likely use CEPA to venture into l provincial jurisdiction). Cleaning up grid & electrifying almost-everything is key to decarbonization, so good news tho could happen faster (we’re matching Biden’s timeline)

7. Ending thermal coal exports is excellent and sets up a precedent for other fossil fuel exports (that’ll be a fight but @GreenpeaceCA & friends have been prepping for it for a long time)

8. Underlying this - and key to political survivability - is a new $2B transition fund for AB, SK and NL to help workers / communities through the transition. If this is real, & engages with affected groups, it is something that NDP / labour movement should be able to get behind

9. The prospect clearly unsettles @jkenney , who has unleashed his War Room to attack any attempt by feds to help for oil workers affected by global shift to renewables

10. While I’m as grumpy as the next person over election interrupting my pandemic vacation, getting a mandate for these measures plus another minority govt to hold feet to fire is not terrible (though we still need much more & we won’t stop pressing for accelerated timeline)

11. In sum: looks like carbon tax victory at SCC has emboldened feds to move into primarily provincial jurisdictions (electricity, maybe buildings?) and (finally, cautiously) begin to directly tackle the elephant in the room: the O&G sector.

11. Expect blowback from Big Oil and its minions, but if you look at the recent polling - majority in oil regions recognize change is coming and want their governments to soften that landing, springboard to future.

And yes, my thread numbering/ spelling leaves much to be desired. I blame working on an iPhone in a car while the 16 year old has seized control of the musical selection / volume.

@climatekeith Suggest you look at the 2015 and 2019 platform as they relate to the #ClimateCrisis During their time in Government, GHG emissions have gone up! Remember “ Canada is back”? Fool me once….etc. #cdnpoli #Elex44

@climatekeith So in 11 hours of posting this dribble, looks like you are the only one commenting on your viewpoint. Did you take your Tesla? What fossil fuels are you giving up? I'd bet 90% of every item you used camping was was created using those fossil fuels you want to keep in the ground!
