This is a story that Judge Jeffrey Sutton shares about an encounter late in my dad's life, when he bought his friend Ruth two dozen roses for her birthday. "Some things in life are more important than votes."
I'm very sad to hear about the passing of my parents' good friend, and my father's wonderful colleague, Justice Ginsburg. May her memory be a blessing. I'd like to share a couple of passages that convey what she meant to my dad.../3
This is from a roast he delivered for her 10th anniversary on the DC Circuit Court of Appeals. They'd been colleagues on that court until he went to the Supreme Court; she hadn't joined him there yetโand he missed her.
@cjscalia
This is beautiful.
Americans need to emulate their friendship.
We aren't the Sharks & the Jets; the Crips & the Bloods.
We all have to make this experiment work together.
@cjscalia
Oh the irony. Some votes don't allow the most important things in life...like Life. I'm glad they were friends; Christianity calls us to love one another...even our enemies. But I refuse to ignore the casualties and confusion that Ginsburg's votes have brought to our society.
@cjscalia
This was very nice. A reminder when politics was a little less ugly. I hope her last request is honored. โMy most fervent wish is that I not be replaced until the next president is installed.โ ~~RBG
@cjscalia
Also Christopher Scalia and every Republican:
- Ram through a nominee before January 3rd no matter what!!!
Republicans have no decency or shame.
@cjscalia
thank you for sharing. Now, stand up & speak with commensurate decency and patriotic fidelity to tell Pres. Trump and McConnell that they should let the nomination wait till after the election. Do the right thing. The nation will reward you for your courage. History will remember
@cjscalia
Then tell Mitch McConnell to do the right thing & allow the next president to choose the nominee. ( Ha...McConnell is Telegraphing he knows Trump will lose).
@cjscalia
@JohnCornyn
I applaud you for what you are saying. But I feel it necessary to remind you that four years ago you signed a letter from
@senatemajldr
suggesting that the Senate would not vote on a new Supreme Court Justice pick until after the election. Honor her last wishes!
@cjscalia
@JohnCornyn
Please honor

โFour and a half years ago, when Republicans refused to hold a hearing or an up-or-down vote on Merrick Garland, they invented the principle that the Senate shouldn't fill an open seat on the Supreme Court before a new president was sworn in.โ
@cjscalia
I must say ty. I haven't agreed to much of what your father said or how he voted but respected him. I'm not sure how your thoughts were when he passed but I was appalled at the rep. Congress acted. It was like let's move on & vote someone in. And I'm sorry he was denied that.
