Alright y'all I put together a tutorial for some Serum sound design- I didn't want it to be too long so I just focused on one patch this time. I hope it's helpful!
Itβs a weird time to announce something but I have some ~Good News~
Monday is my first day as a sound designer at Bungie!! I am very excited to join such an incredibly talented and sweet team, and very grateful to get to work on the coolest game! Here we gooooo
V sad that Presage is going away, it was the first bit of Destiny content that I got to work on and is still one of my fav experiences in the game. Everyone's positive reaction to it was so special and for that I am very grateful! 𧑠On to more cool things
Hi! I'm Carlye and I'm a senior sound designer
@bungie
workin on Destiny. I work on seasonal content like portals, evil crystal prisons, teleportation to psychic realms, and more! This job always keeps me on my toes, and I love what I do.

Hi, I'm Carlye! I'm a senior sound designer at Bungie working on Destiny 2. I've been in game audio for 8 years now, and I love synths.
Just this week someone assumed I wasn't a dev at an award ceremony I was representing my studio and nominated at π€ͺ

Today is my last day working on Destiny 2, as next week I will be transferring to the Marathon team. I am very excited for this transition and the chance to take on new challenges and ideas, and to work with such a fun and skilled group of audio people
Absolutely over the moon to share that I've been promoted to senior sound designer at Bungie!! I will now be helping lead audio for seasonal releases, working alongside the coolest team to ensure our seasons continue sounding the best they can! Bring on the portals π€
Literally every new SFX task I get Iβm like βI donβt know how to do this!β βwhat the hell should it sound like??β βam I even a sound designer?β
And then somehow it gets done and I have that crisis all over again for a new task
Had some conversations last week that made me realize there's some interest in my naming method and workflow for synthesis. I was hesitant to share this all for a while because I was afraid my system would be criticized. This is what works for me, adapt what you will for you!
You know who I go to when I need to know how to access a part of the game to implement audio to? Test.
Who makes sure something I did didn't negatively affect other areas of the game? Test.
Who helps run our mix sessions so the game actually sounds good? Test.
βTest should be the first to goβ
Test is the most undervalued, understaffed, disrespected org in gaming (IMO).
Games would not ship without QA.
They discover and report upon an endless number of bugs in content, suggest (and in many cases implement) fixes.
AH I FORGOT!! Two days ago was my one year anniversary at Bungie! This year has gone by so fast but I've enjoyed every minute of it. I couldn't have asked for a better team or a better game to work on. Three seasons down, many more to go! π₯³
I seem to have been spared from the layoffs today but many of my exceptionally talented and kind peers have not. I am devastated to lose such amazing coworkers who were mentors, advocates, and friends. Please help signal boost as they try to land on their feet
Grasp of Avarice is out!! Not only was this the first dungeon I've worked on, but I got to lead the SFX work on it as well! Huge props to the RaD team for working so hard to make this fantastic dungeon. I hope you all enjoy it, happy launch day!
Iβve been kinda quiet abt it partially because I donβt want to sound boastful, and thereβs been a lot going on in the news. But Iβm just so, so happy to be at Bungie. I have incredible coworkers, plenty to learn, and just a whole ton of support from my team and the studio.
Wanted to quickly share a game audio implementation tip that is so helpful and simple, I'm sure many ppl do it, but for so long I had no idea I could be doing it. And that is the use of pips in events for spotting audio in game!
I got a request to share some of my favorite serum patches I've made for sound design, so I've just put together a video going through some of them. Hope you enjoy!
Iβm kind of sad that a lot of game audio sharing of techniques, ideas, and tutorials can turn into a laser focus on the gear and plugins involved. Please know Iβm not trying to call anyone out, and Iβm guilty of this too, but Iβm worried about the kind of message it sends
Working on Destiny on PC but playing retail on console means I never know what buttons to push to bring out my sparrow. Just now I accidentally joined a team chat channel then yelled "what noooo" at strangers before remembering to mute myself π€¦ββοΈ
Today's my bday!!
Tomorrow also marks 6yrs in games for me. Maybe I'll stop counting eventually but every year still feels like defiance to gg, my teachers and classmates who tried to intimidate me, and my own self doubt. I'm still here, so sure I'll celebrate that π₯³
Hear me out, sometimes I like designing sounds while listening to music. It helps me identify issues with the sound if itβs played back in noisier environments i.e it has too quiet of a tail. Obv not great for EQing, tuning verb, etc but an interesting step to try out

I will not be working today. There is immense pressure to stay silent and "power through" that I was taught from day 1 in my career. The threat of retaliation and ridicule is ever present and many times you feel you are trapped and alone.
I am a sexual abuse survivor. Decades later I still have moments of being so disgusted with my body that I feel like vomiting and sobbing at the same time. Yβall need to understand how insidious this is. For an industry you love to openly house and protect ppl who inflict this
Yesterday was my 30th birthday and today is my 5 year anniversary of working in games! Two pretty big milestones, but these days I still feel like the same lil kid just wanting to play some pocket pikachu π₯³
Some little nuggets in here about the sound design process! I remember when I came across Pax and Juan's plastic wrap recordings in our source jam folder, I immediately had to fiddle with them. 30 mins with some Serum later we had some fun new sounds for Strand π
Been dealing with some health issues lately and totally missed it: I just hit my 4 year anniversary of doing sound design in games! Not a ton of time but I'm proud of every drop of it. Never thought I'd be here so cheers to that
Iβm very excited to share that
@RJMattingly
and I are giving a talk at GDC about the audio of Marvelβs Iron Man VR!
This game has been the most challenging and rewarding project Iβve worked on, and Iβm really looking forward to sharing our insight.
Wow... Iron Man VR is out today and I am so dang proud of what weβve accomplished. Shout out to the incredible audio work of
@RJMattingly
@ghoulnoise
and
@uhhhhhhnate
(and special guest
@etherb0x
!) who helped make this become a reality π§‘π§‘
Recruiters: hey we know you have a full time job but how about this: a 2 month contract for half the pay, no benefits, where we take an extra cut and the blood of your firstborn and personally come to your home every day and slap you in the face. Well let me know if interested!
This was the very first season I was audio lead on, so it'll always be special to me. This congratulatory letter and patch from Bungie was the icing on the cake β€οΈ
Something I still have to remind myself to do constantly when designing sounds:
Mute and solo layers frequently to discern if they are actually audible/contributing something good or if they are just contributing to noise, lack of clarity, and lack of rhythm
Hey y'all, this was my last week at Camouflaj. I'm so grateful to the team and will treasure the last 3 years we spent working together. I'm truly proud of what we've made and wish the team the best going forward. As for myself, looking forward to the next chapter
New form of imposter syndrome for me:
Iβm too drained to engage or share about my craft online and at meetups so I must be a fake.
I think itβs easy to see othersβ outward passion and think thatβs what I need to be, when really right now I need to protect my mental health
Damn just learned about Afrorack, a Chicago-based organization that teaches sound design and modular synthesis to young adults of color. Go support these young sound designers!!

One of life's simple pleasures as a sound designer is accidentally generating a weird looking waveform, then sharing it with anyone around you like a kid parading around a cool rock they found
No matter how long I sound design for Destiny and how many themes we cover, I will always get tasked with a sound I've never designed anything like and I just have to figure it out. The joy and the pain π€ͺ
There's so much cool stuff in this season!! I was constantly wowed by so many details in this release when we were doing the final mix, everyone really just knocked it out of the park. Can't wait to play it with y'all! π₯π₯
For 10yrs I've wanted to make electronic music, but never felt like I could do it. I learned music theory, DAWs, production- still couldn't do it.
Finally after doing sound design for 3yrs I feel like I'm learning my voice and how to get my ideas out. It's really freeing
I'm often told sound design is a total mystery but it's basically this over and over and over:
Ok I need to balance the highs/mids/lows/width/punch/rhythm/phrasing/weight/context/emotion/simplicity/clarity/motion/layering and ughhh this needs to get into the game somehow
I hate that I was on edge allll week paranoid about this shit and it happened not just once, but multiple times. Massive FUCK YOU to whoever did this. To take what should be an edifying experience and turn it into trauma, fear, assault, humiliation... I am livid
We've been informed of multiple folks that were roofied last Thursday night in SF, most probably at the karaoke event we hosted.
Thankfully they had friends who looked after them and they're ok all things considered.

Ack I forgot that Wednesday was my two year anniversary at Bungie!! Since I've started I've worked on Season of the Chosen, Splicer, Lost, Risen, Haunted, and Plunder. It's been really fulfilling work and I couldn't have a more talented team to work alongside. Love this game π§‘
Wooo our team got a GANG award nomination for SFX!!!
So proud of everyone I get to work beside, they're not just amazing sound designers but humble, sharing, supportive peers. Much love to our audio team, including music and dialog who also received noms!
Just gave a lil talk about being a sound designer at the school I went to back in the day. My original teacher is still there running the audio dept π₯² was super great seeing him again and sharing some knowledge with the new generation of audio folks! Was really special to me
Thrilled that at long last our team got some project t-shirts! After 2 years of sworn secrecy itβs wild to just casually stroll around in one of these
I have to switch to decaf coffee because I've realized every time I have a bad anxiety day is when I drink coffee, but BOY do people have opinions on decaf. Like I was just talking abt it with a friend and a stranger overheard and loudly said "BOOO" at me
So caught up in this busy GDC week that I haven't processed yet that Moss won Best Sound Design in the indie category for the GANG awards. So honored to have played a part in the sound of the game. Big congrats to Stephen Hodde and the
@PolyarcGames
team!
Something I've underestimated as I've worked in games for longer is how little I feel like I have something to add or share. Amateur me was like let me teach you something!! Current me is like nah I have nothing to teach π€ͺ
Head's up
@toggleModal
's browser EQ extension for chrome is super great for clarifying police scanner feeds. The one I'm listening to suffers from a persistent low rumble and this completely removed that!

Damn sometimes getting the seemingly simplest, most straightforward sound to work correctly in a game can be SO complicated and challenging. I would have had no idea before I did this line of work just what goes into it all, it's a miracle anything works really
All in all after 3 years I will have worked on 12 seasons of Destiny, and was audio lead on 4 of those seasons. It's truly been a dream working on Destiny 2, and I will always think fondly of this very special game I got to be a part of π§‘
Today marks 3 years that I've been a professional sound designer. Three things:
β’ Many wonderful people have supported me to get here
β’ I still doubt myself daily
β’ Majin Buu is the best character in dbz
@tha_rami
Game audio sound designer:
Your sound is as dynamic as your least dynamic layer. One unchanging layer can totally ruin the motion of your sound. Automate volume, filter, pitch, phase, LFO- or just cut it! In fact you probably already have too many layers.
It's a very bittersweet transition and I will greatly miss working on Destiny. I am so proud of all that we have built together. This team works so damn hard, and I can't wait to see what's next. The game is in very good hands and still has the best sound design talent behind it!
