People 30+: Do you remember taking math tests in middle school? And it was against the rules to use calculators? Your teachers would say snarky things like: "Well, are you just gonna walk around with a calculator in your pocket for the rest of your life?" ... ACTUALLY YES 📲

@candacerthomas I’m 23 and they were saying that the whole entire time I was school - even when we DID HAVE CALCULATORS IN OUR PHONES!!! When we mentioned our phones they’d be like “you may not have your phone on you !” Lmao

@candacerthomas My Dad also said that. The number of times I now pull out my phone to use my calculator in front of him is ... perhaps ... excessive.

@candacerthomas Lol yeah, JOKES ON THEM. Plus, after all the calculus classes, I still never use it.

@candacerthomas Yeah. But I also used my TI-83 to program games into it.

@candacerthomas Yep, pen and paper it was until I studied Surveying, then it was allowed half the time.

@candacerthomas Currently working in a school, and they have (at least here) moved to just teach maths as a thing where you always have a calculator on you. The hardest thing they had to do in their head was 7th grade 11² , 12² etc - stuff that is practical to be able to do in your mind

@candacerthomas Yeah, no, because I'm of that age where there were no real "pocket calculators" when I was in middle school.

@candacerthomas I'm 28, but I definitely remember my middle school math teachers being that way. My face when my Calculus/Lin. Algebra professors allowed programs like Mathematica on exams:

@candacerthomas Do they still give snarky justifications against using a calculator to middle schoolers? Like, y'all know the gig is up right?

@candacerthomas Yes I do. Then in high school I had a standard deviation test which I programmed my calculator to do. Other students were pissed but my teacher thought that if I could do that I clearly understood the material

@candacerthomas Yep they always said that. Then I get to college and we can have. A calculator out for the tests.

@candacerthomas I’m under 30 (not by much though) and had that told to me in middle school and early high school 😂

@candacerthomas I remember having a younger teacher who said "you can use a programmable calculator, but you must program it yourself. *I* know how to program one and if you can't explain your program you get a zero." That's how I learned how to program mine with all the formulas. 😁 She ruled.
