After the shutdown, the rocket fell back onto the pad but managed to survive. Due to the engine shutdown, the LES computer concluded that they must have reached orbit, so it decoupled. After this, the capsule assumed that it must be in reentry, so it deployed its parachutes.

A video of Mercury-Redstone 1, better known as the Four Inch Flight. The uncrewed mission was the first attempt to launch a Mercury capsule with the Redstone rocket. In the mission, the engines started but unexpectedly shut down approximately 4 inches off the ground [Continued⬇️]

@burakalpkaya34 Didn't even mention the best part: because it was a fully fueled rocket with no lateral support and a parachute catching wind up top, they considered how to quickly vent the rocket. One option being to shoot it with a rifle. Luckily that didn't happen
