I am still in shock — Honored to be on the 2021 Forbes 30 Under 30 List!
My journey hasn’t been easy but this is one moment that makes it so worth it. I’m most proud of making this list for highlighting OUR art — Black contributions to fashion 🙏🏽
“ A Texas woman?” That’s THEE Opal Lee — She walked 1,400 miles, at 89 yrs old, from Fort Worth to DC to campaign for Juneteenth to be recognized as a federal holiday
Imo there’s also a convo to be had about the lack of pre-teen + teenage aspirational imagery, figures/role models + fashion — that age range doesn’t seem to have many age appropriate things to aspire to like we did(that’s so Raven, Disney channel, supersweet16, cheetah girls, etc)
There were many telling instances with Virgil but the one for me was when this young Black designer, Wole Olosunde, shared how excited he was to meet Virgil + show him a glasses design he completed
That young man’s glasses were ripped off in the Off-White SS19 Collection smh👇🏽
I love that Ciara + Russell are APESHIT Beyoncé + Jay-Z for Halloween —-
I love that she’s in the actual Peter Pilotto suit that The Queen wore - Reference but make it real 👏🏽
Loving this hair by Nikki Nelms in March Allure — Go Big or Go Home
“It’s not there’s anything wrong with tiny studs or delicate braids it’s more that there is so much right with bold out sized earrings + own the room hair”
I see a lot of Cher talk on the TL so...
“Cher stole some of my stuff—I came first and she came after. But I thought it was the greatest compliment ever, so I wasn’t mad; I was quite pleased.” -Amii Stewart
Black women did it first per usual.
Love these images of Toni Morrison.
She was out here in a silky slip dress, no bra, rocking an afro living her best life in a New York disco party. 1974.
I love that Andre 3000 didn’t let gender norms define how he expressed himself via his style/costumes. HBD!
He - in the wake of Little Richard, Prince + Busta Rhymes (now, Pharrell) - helped redefine black masculinity in black music. 3Stacks’ freedom set many others free 🙌🏽👏🏽
Telfar is literally redefining luxury. Not in theory but in practice.
Out here dismantling the very notion that luxury rests upon: exclusivity — Telfar said:
Access 🤝 Luxury
I think IceSpice is doing just fine without a stylist. There’s something super authentic about her individual style. Not over-curated yet — The red carpet moment was giving Pleats Please by Isse in my opinion
And it worked. Love it when people take back their cultural contrbiutions to protect them 👏🏽 Now, if only black women got this kind of traction when we say hands off our things
How social media, FaceTune + plastic surgery created a single, cyborgian look —
“The gradual emergence, among professionally beautiful women, of a single, cyborgian face. It’s a young face, of course, The face is distinctly white but ambiguously ethnic”
So cultural nuance of
@TraceeEllisRoss
’ look - People used to show up to the African American Day parade in Harlem with frames around their faces! Lorraine O’Grady’s ‘Art Is’ movement.
Centering blackness as beauty. Reclaiming the narrative. BLACK CAMP!

Thread. Im reading about post-Civil War Black life. Listen, white women were SEETHING about Black freewomen dressing themselves well LOL
White mistresses were so upset they wrote in their diaries about how bothered they were former slaves were stuntin on their asses💅🏽
Joan kept a Birkin + a pair of Louboutins — Stacy Beverly talked with me about how Loub was one of the only brands who worked with her team. Its still a shame more designers + brands didn’t see the value in aligning themselves with Girlfriends’ Black audience smh AND STILL...
Aaliyah + her bestfriend Kidada Jones (daughter of Quincy Jones + fiancé of Tupac)
They met backstage m at the 1993 Tommy Hilfiger show that Kidada styled. Kidada often styled Aalliyah - Aaliyah says she never bought one of anything: Always one for herself + one for Kidada 🖤
Today in 1970 Cheryl Adrienne Browne was crowned Miss Iowa— Which meant she would be the 1st Black woman to compete in the Miss America pageant👑
Miss America had recently changed pageant rule
#7
which up until then stated: “contestants must be of good health + of the white race”
This is an Ola Hudson appreciation THREAD. Ola was a prominent Black designer in the 70s...
She designed many of David Bowie’s stage costumes + clothes. She designed for John Lennon, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder + Janet Jackson
She’s also the mother of Guns N’ Roses’ Slash 💅🏽
So when the Black luxury is at the traditional luxury price point its tew expensive? Then when the Black luxury is at an accessible price point its tew many nickgurs have it? Which is it —Quickly.
How modelling agencies recruit refugees from one of the world’s biggest camps
“I worked every day but came back with no money. A lot of people think I have money because I went to Europe, I say I have nothing” Says Achol from Kakuma refugee camp

Post civil war/early 20th century black style is not something we see often.
Harriet Tubman's great-nieces Eva Katherine Stewart Northup + Alida Maud Stewart. Harriet helped to raise them. This was at Woodrow Wilson’s inauguration in 1913👇🏽
I didn’t get to watch this yesterday but I’m catching up on the clips —
This is what innovation looks like. This is one of the freshest things to happen in the industry in a longggg time + a Black woman did it. Amazing!
We need to say Oluwatoyin Salau’s name + we need answers about who would do this to her under the guise of religion — justice for Toyin
#JusticeforToyin
Give Fonzworth Bentley his flowers. As a kid I didn’t realize what he was doing was dandyism + how it combatted stereotypes about Black men while expressing his individuality + style
+ He was doing it in Hip-Hop at a time where masculinity was defined by a particular look
Love that Polo Ralph Lauren is highlighting black polo players Malachi Lyles, Daymar Rosser, Kareem Rosser + Shariah Harris.
Shariah is the 1st black woman to play at the highest tier of US Polo 💅🏽
These Howard students are well past the 2 week mark of their protest. They shouldn’t have to sleep outside because campus living conditions are unsafe — Standing with them. Donate if you are able.
This was
#BlackBurnTakeover
Tues as strong winds took out couple big tents & Howard students rushed to take care of food/supplies. Today is Day 17. It will rain tmrw & most immediate need is pallets & tarps.
Tents/food can also be dropped off at Blackburn or 👉 $thelivemovement
Love that Cardi is styled in Oscar de la Renta, a Dominican Republic born designer (trained by Spain based designer Cristóbal Balenciaga) for her Vogue January 2020 cover story — Good bit of cultural nuance there.
I’ve seen a lot of critique of the costuming not being accurate to the regency this season of
#bridgerton
but I actually really love Cressida Cowper’s looks — She’s peacocking because the weight of she + her mother’s fate rest on her shoulders. She literally always has a shoulder
A quick THREAD about the Mardi Gras Indian tradition + the costumes it birthed 🦚
In 1718 runaway slaves were taken in + hidden by the indigenous ppl in the NO Louisiana area. Throughout the centuries African + Native American cultures mixed to create a new masking culture🙌🏽

! Today in 1865, 2yrs after Emancipation Proclamation, slaves in Texas were notified by union soldiers they were indeed free
"The scatter" followed - When masses of former slaves left Texas to find family or move north
#Juneteenth
is still not a federal holiday
I will say this: my time at Vogue, at Condé Nast, was the most challenging + miserable time of my career — The bullying + testing from white counterparts, the completely thankless work, the terrible base pay + the racism was exhausting.
“We started on Memorial Day ( May 26th 2014). It took so much longer than expected. We had people crystaling 'round the clock until 3pm the day of the event(June 2nd 2014) — It took 20 people to get it done.”
Adam Selman’s team hand laid these crystals in. ONE. WEEK. 💎🙏🏽
Saw tweet asking why Black consumers still supporting lulu lemon after the founder made it clear he isn’t interested in a Black consumer base — I think there’s actually deeper consumer behavior + psychology that needs unpacking there. Same for Sk*ms + Good American.
THREAD. Let’s get into Beyoncé’s
#Spirit
lewk references.
This is a custom Mark Fast bodycon dress. It’s texture + volume is very reminiscent of the grass skirts of the Tharaka Tribe of Kenya
I never understood why Black women were buying + wearing Sk*ms — But that tweet with the “nude” shade for the Black model being the actual color Black.........
That should be enough.
One thing about Chadwick, he stayed in Givenchy + Versace — Loved how Ashley West worked alongside him to have custom suiting made for the Black Panther press tour.
Seeing really traditional heritage houses incorporated nods to African textiles + prints just for him was so cool
