Astounding, the first such find from the ice: The remains of a small dog, including the collar and leash. It is unlikely to be recent as the collar is made of twisted wooden fibres. Probably medieval or older based on the other finds here. Good dog 🙂

It can be difficult to discern between a small dog and a fox based on pictures only. Our paleobiologist is suitably cautious until he has studied the bones in the lab. Still, he is pretty certain that the mandible is from a small dog. The collar and leash are also telling.
There appears to be a lot of bones from the dog, Some of them can be seen here. However, the skull is missing. Maybe it is still inside the ice. We will see - the melt will continue for another month...
