Nah fr Azula was a mean child sure, but her own Mother straight up HATED her before she even had a chance to grow. The expectations and abuse that Ozai inflicted on her, as well as her fear of being abused like Zuko also add into the equation. She deserved a chance at redemption
@RhydonAli
yes!! azula yearned for the love of her mother and didn't get it so she turned for approval from her abusive father who only used her like a weapon and an object to be discarded. no one ever loved her or cared about her. like at least zuko had iroh and ursa
@bpdasa
It's less the fandom and more that's just how the show frames it, Azula is very much an example of pathologizing power in women, and demonizing mental illness
@bpdasa
True, but Azusa could have easily been redeemed in a similar manner if only she had had a good-natured family member show her love and direction.
So, in a sense, this is actually Iroh's fault.
@bpdasa
I mean, I "parents" tried to murder me numerous times, taunted me about it, left me placed to get lost, taunted me about it, and I never thought, hmm I should take this out on others. At least Zuko loved Iroh back. Azula didn't even love him.
@bpdasa
She was a Machiavellian and knew she was a bad person, enjoyed being a bad person and never changed. Even in the comics her "character development" was minimal at best.

@bloomfilters
I think this comes down to how the show portrayed the abuse.
Zuko’s was VERY overt, physical and often mentioned, whilst Azula’s was very layered, pathological and rarely (if ever) touched upon.
@bpdasa
Was azula worse than her brother? Yeah. She was also enveloped in a single flawed perspective and instilled with someone else’s values for her entire life.
