It is worth highlighting that Wayne County Prosecutor, Kym Worthy, allows diversion for theft, breaking & entering, resisting arrest along with a whole host of other crimes with actual VICTIMS. But charged with CCW? Too bad!
For the past 4+ hours I have been watching raw court camera video of Detroit’s CCW Criminal Docket. People who are simply charged with carrying a concealed pistol without a license. Here is what I found:
- 99% black
- 99% male
- ~70% no prior record
Take the case of Mr. Beard. He thought he was legally open carrying (no permit required) but because he had an inside pocket holster with the muzzle hidden, it’s illegal without a CPL. He now has to pay thousands of dollars, forfeit his firearm and spend 12 months on probation.
Another gentlemen simply had an expired CPL, same result.
Laws like these are extremely punitive with NO benefit to society. I implore

and others to watch the end result of these laws. You’re really hurting people for absolutely no reason.
Another EXTREMELY concerning trend I noticed is defense counsel is often completely incompetent and doesn’t understand Michigan gun laws at all. AND THIS IS THEIR F’JOB! As an attorney Mr. Menken should know if 45 days has passed, the CPL is presumed VALID absent a denial letter.
Today in the House Criminal Justice Committee a woman testified detailing her story of how she became a convicted felon when she drove a shot loved one to the hospital. She didn’t realize there was a handgun in the vehicle. Go to 25:05
Nathaniel Rucker simply missed the deadline to renew his CPL. He had several deaths in his family during the COVID pandemic and has a career as a security guard.
That will all come to an end thanks to Michigan’s draconian CPL law that treats Mr. Rucker like a felon for missing a…

Listen to 57 year old Theresa Mccants, who has no prior criminal history, cry at the prospect that she will be defenseless against attackers as a survivor of domestic violence. Her crime? Carrying on an expired CPL.

This is just absolutely 🤯. So the assistant prosecutor (off-screen) is telling a defendant who was just discharged from probation that their CPL application will be adjudicated by the “Gun Commission.” County Gun Commissions/Boards were eliminated in 2015.

Public Defender is visibly frustrated people keep getting arrested for CCW. Says it would be a better society if we stopped doing this. I couldn’t agree more.

Public Defender AGAIN lashes out at these increasingly ridiculous CCW charges. Says there is no emphasis on educating these people on the law. It’s purely a money racket for the state.

As I continue to watch these cases, I am noticing a trend where defendants are separating the magazine from the handgun in an attempt to legally transport it. Specifically, they put the handgun in the trunk and the magazine in the glovebox.
Unfortunately, this is not compliant…

Not DUI or DWLS either? I feel like those are both pretty common things that happen to otherwise not-scumbag people where a clean record might be an incentive to fix their busted decision making.
