A recent Tweet got me to thinking about the art of being a flight engineer on the big pistons and early multi engine jets. Clockwise from the ↖️ is the Martin JRM Mars, the Douglas DC-8, Boeing KC-97 and the Mother of them All, the might B-36. JRM & B-36 needed 2 FEs!

Yep. My dad was one on C-130s. He got a commendation for successfully handling a double engine failure on takeoff. He told me they barely missed the radar tower. One part of this is appreciating how much less reliable the piston engines and the electronic components were back…

I did the FE course. However before I had my ride, I was hired as an FO. I still regret as I would’ve flown an L1011. But in terms of career, it would’ve been, not quite a dead end job, but close.
