Thanks for all the replies!!
It’s just a slangish phrase to say goodbye to somebody leaving in some bittersweet tone, and Abe’s not promoting any particular sex position. All right.
I honestly wonder how come they’ve chosen Abe for the qrazy sex-promoter in the meme, rather than other leaders of nations. If you’re an X-user in Anglosphere and know why plz lemme know that.
Great thanks to you all for sharing information!
Why Japan?
→ ’cuz it’s the most famous for its declining birth rate.
Why Abe? (rather than any other Japanese PMs that’ve also dealt with birth rate issues.)
→ ’cuz he’s also known for his anime-promoting policies.
One more question: what’s ‘See you, space cowboy’?
They often say the phrase when they refer to the meme.
I’ve learnt that it came from ‘Cowboy Bebop’, but does that anime or the phrase have sth to do with Abe or the idea of promoting sex? (like, associated to cowboy position?)

A similar Western internet slang you might find interesting is "Press F to pay respects" which came from a Call of Duty game where you have to push a button at your friend's funeral. It was ridiculed when it came out but now has become a legitimate way to express sadness online.
@amapichannel
This is the kind of thing that I find most fun. I'm sure there are so many funny memes that are locked behind language barriers or cultural differences and when you can finally find them it's so interesting to see how different places approach topics 😂
@amapichannel
Yeah that is why this meme was either created or became popular after Abe's assassination. It's used for whenever there is a piece of Japanese media that promoted having children because they are cute or fulfilling ect. Example is Spy x Family
@amapichannel
My favorite usage of that phrase is in Titanfall 2 as the message the mecha gives the player when they eject and get jettisoned to the sky as their Mecha explodes under them
@amapichannel
an aspect of this meme that i think even most westerners miss is that "see you space cowboy" was really common
to see/say on 4chan specifically, which of course is western futaba channel.
@amapichannel
Cowboy Bebop was much more popular in America than in Japan if i remember the history of it's release correctly.
i could be wrong though.
@amapichannel
Cowboy Bebop was REALLY big with many online people, and was one of the first anime that became popular in the United States, alongside Dragonball Z, Evangelion, and others in the early 2000's. For many Westerners, "See You Space Cowboy" is one of the best known "anime" phrases.
@amapichannel
Thank you for wanting to ask about the memes and just generally spread understanding. Seeing people come together to explain cultural things like this was really wholesome and nice to see.
ありがとう !
@amapichannel
The phrase “See you, Space Cowboy” does come from Cowboy Bebop, but the phrase “Space Cowboy” was created by the Steve Miller Band in 1969. It originally meant a drug user, but can also refer to a cowboy-like character who is in space (Spike Spiegel, Han Solo, Starlord, etc.).
@amapichannel
I might be wrong but the way you ask questions and then directly summarize the answers feels very Japanese. I don't see anyone else doing it this way, but it's enjoyable.
