School staff are key workers without PPE expected to work without social distancing in poorly ventilated classrooms. Surely priority for vaccines should be given?
This morning I have written to government
@educationgovuk
to remind Education Ministers of these expectations. Our profession abides by these principles as part of our teacher standards
@CharteredColl
I have contacted
@educationgovuk
today concerned about the large numbers of children attending school as
#lockdown3
begins. Today’s announcement from
@GavinWilliamson
about ‘vulnerable’ including those who cannot learn digitally from home threatens the effectiveness of ‘closure’.
Today instead of taking holiday, many of our teaching colleagues will be caring for the children of key-workers in school. Thank you for your exceptional courage and selfless public service
@CharteredColl
Teachers are incredibly committed to supporting children & young people. However, we cannot expect them to continue working in school over the summer. We must value our brilliant colleagues & allow them to rest a while
@CharteredColl
Criticism of our teaching profession is at best unhelpful and at worst damaging to morale. Teachers are working incredibly hard to support children, young people & families at this time of crisis. They deserve our fullest support
@CharteredColl
Having taught all my life in both secondary & primary schools I can honestly say I have never met a ‘work-shy’ teacher. Ignore those with little knowledge of our profession. The work our educators do with commitment & care should be applauded unreservedly
@CharteredColl
We understand that this is a fast moving situation and that decisions need to be revised. Please take steps to agree that remote learning will be provided by all phases of education from Monday
@educationgovuk
@CharteredColl
Thank you.
Very sorry to hear that Sir Kevan Collins has resigned from his post as Recovery Commissioner. A good man who has tried his best to convince government that our children & young people’s futures are worthy of investment
@CharteredColl
It is very regrettable that media stories can lead to the hounding of individual colleagues. In the most recent example this has concerned a headteacher doing his utmost as a professional to listen & respond to the views of his children. He deserves better.
#Deplorable
Everyone is tired and needs a break. Enjoy your half term holiday next week - take as much time as you can to rest and to do things you love. Life is precious. Be proud that you have done all you can to help over the last terrible weeks, now take some time for you
@CharteredColl
Nothing about this is normal. We are all carrying anxiety. This is not the time for perfection - just doing the best you can right now is all anyone can ask. We will get through this & one day we will look back and wonder how
@CharteredColl
I genuinely believe that the calm humane leadership shown consistently by school leaders shines a light on others’ dithering ineptitude. So proud to work with some of the best in society - our teachers, headteachers, principals & CEOs
@CharteredColl
Extra thanks this morning to our primary school leaders who are doing a terrific job under impossible circumstances. Your tireless public service Leadership at this time is so important to your team & to so many families & children. Thank you so very much
@CharteredColl
Irritated that the impression in some quarters is that teachers have been granted an additional day of holiday on 18 Dec. INSET days are for professional learning which cannot be held with minimal notice. Track & trace requirements continue until 23 Dec
#RespectPlease
Tomorrow it will be March. We have come through the darkest bleakest months of winter. As we come into the light and gentle warmth of spring maybe we can dare to hope ......
It increasingly appears evident that schools are just expected to deal with whatever DfE throws at them with little regard for workload, finances, staffing capacity or wellbeing. This is unsustainable
@CharteredColl
Exasperating that valued colleagues worried about infection, nevertheless taught classes of children today. If
@educationgovuk
had listened to our profession this could have been avoided. Again SEND & Alt provision ignored. Worried for nursery colleagues. Utter disrespect.
Never have I known a September like this in schools. A combination of delightful reconnection, with high levels of challenge about infection. Colleagues are already tired out. It is brilliant that schools are back but remember - your best is good enough. Thank you
@CharteredColl
The results given to some students yesterday were extremely unfair. Teachers should have been given the chance last week to appeal against harsh decisions impacting exceptional students. This injustice must be reversed. We need government that respects education
@CharteredColl
This lockdown feels really difficult to endure. We have to find the tiniest things to celebrate. Today we have reached the January half-way point and that’s a milestone on our journey towards springtime. Oh and it’s Friday! Thank you for being there for our children.
Teaching is a very challenging role expertly provided by professionals. I am afraid it is not helpful to imply that a team of volunteers could come anywhere close to providing the expertise that our children and young people experience in our classrooms
@charteredcoll
Glad to hear Sir Kevan Collins has been appointed to lead education recovery. We need to focus on so much more than ‘catch-up’. Children need to reconnect with the arts, sports, play, musical performance, drama, singing, learning as a collective
@CharteredColl
#Joy
Ignore all the negativity. You know in your heart that the job you do makes a massive difference. So proud of you and everyone who supports teachers to bring hope
@CharteredColl
Offer kindness to someone today. We are all holding deep anxiety about the future. Your warmth and thoughtfulness will make others feel better. Thank you for everything you are doing.
@CharteredColl
🌈
Whatever today brings, all any of us can hope for is to do our best. You are not alone, you are part of a collegiate profession that is proud to teach. Go well
@CharteredColl
Remember last Sunday evening? Most of the things you were worrying about resolved themselves. Try to banish anxiety this evening in the hope that everything will be ok again. We can do this if we help one another 💐
@CharteredColl
The Chartered College of Teaching is now financially independent of government. As your professional body we shall work tirelessly to build teachers’ status in society

@CharteredColl
If you are worrying about tomorrow please know that you are not alone. If you are part of the education community there are so many colleagues feeling as you do, but ready to help. These feelings will pass I promise
@CharteredColl
#ProudToTeach
Hearing that teachers & school leaders are working unsustainably long hours to manage competing demands of work & home. Along with health, education is truly a public service to be applauded. Thank you so much
@CharteredColl
Today I have informed
@educationgovuk
that teachers are pleased to be back but are worried about lack of testing availability, unavoidable staff absence, extra expenditure, assessment & exams 2021 & inspection
@CharteredColl
This feels such a struggle at the moment. If you fear the days ahead I promise you are not alone. Brighter times will come - we will get through this. You make such a difference to the hopes and dreams of those you teach. Thank you
@CharteredColl
Schools have begun the important business of picking up the threads of education. Promising joyful beginnings this term show the profession operating calmly, efficiently & with collective purpose. This hard work does not need to be judged. Work with us not against us
@Ofstednews
Thank you to our wonderful teachers and schools for how you have handled this week.
The Chartered College of Teaching - your professional body - is here to support you.
We need a counter-narrative to the ever powerful group of voices who tell us we know how to teach and we know how children learn. Sorry if this is inconvenient but the job of teaching is much more complex than that. End of.
Sending thoughts and love to all those battling against
#COVID19
in schools & colleges right now. I have a Ministerial meeting this morning DM your concerns. Thank you for all you are doing
@CharteredColl
Personal view - government should pay teachers appropriately in recognition of their tireless professionalism and commitment to the nation’s children and young people.
Unfortunately I have caught Covid despite my best efforts through mask- wearing, vaccinations, social distancing. Feeling very unwell

The Duke of Edinburgh, Patron of the Chartered College of Teaching, has sent the following message of thanks to teachers and school staff, at the start of the Christmas holidays.
The end of term has arrived or is imminent. You did it! Go and enjoy a wonderful holiday that is richly deserved. The achievements of our profession in the last few frightening months have been phenomenal. Thank you so much
@CharteredColl
We got there! The last teaching day in the longest January in the history of time. Well done to you from the wonderful team at the Chartered College of Teaching
@CharteredColl
I have never been as proud to be a teacher as I am right now. Our profession has risen to many challenges over the past weeks and continues to do so. Additional numbers of children will be excitedly preparing to return to school today - stay safe all & enjoy
@CharteredColl
Teachers are working excessive hours as they seek to evidence students’ attainment. Once again, our profession deserves recognition and our deepest thanks
@CharteredColl
Sad but inevitable - the decision to continue educating many of our primary children at home is necessary. The problem is our primary teachers are at capacity due to split classes & support for those children who have been in school throughout. Speaking up for you
@CharteredColl
If you are going in to school today, thank you so very much. Without doubt the children will be delighted to see you. We all need and appreciate you
@CharteredColl
Tonight as we stand on our doorsteps to applaud, let’s also give thanks to our own profession. None of us signed up for this but all of us are doing our very best, in impossible circumstances. One day we shall look back with pride
@CharteredColl
Prince Philip as Patron of the Chartered College of Teaching was a true supporter of our profession. We shall miss him
@RoyalFamily
@CharteredColl
The manner in which our profession has moved forward in response to the huge challenges presented by the pandemic has been incredibly impressive. When this is over we shall be able to look back with pride about the achievements of our children & young people under your guidance.
One of the frustrations of working within education is when policy decisions appear to emerge from political whim
@RishiSunak
Please work with our profession to rebuild status & reverse attrition across colleges & schools, allowing huge ambition to become reality
@CharteredColl
Well here we are at the end of the first full week of lockdown in England and you did it - our early years settings, schools & colleges have remained open. I hope society realises how much we owe to our teaching profession. Thank you so much

.Who will have enough wisdom to loosen the shackles on our teaching profession? To liberate teachers from constant monitoring & scrutiny? To enable peer-review & self regulation? Working in collaboration with intelligent accountability our profession stands a chance of recovery.
It’s lovely to see schools back but already I am hearing of real challenges from heads regarding staff absence & issues re cleaning. The last thing schools need on top of this are visits from inspectors. Collegiality collective problem solving & good humour needed
@CharteredColl
I have written to HMCI today to seek reassurance about risk management and support for school leaders & staff following difficult inspections. Also to be assured that processes are in place to support inspectors - many of whom are school leaders themselves
#Ofsted
@CharteredColl
This lockdown feels incredibly tough. Let’s make sure we all treat each other with kindness and empathy. When we come through this we will have friends and colleagues who know we were there for them. Keep going! Thanks all
@CharteredColl
As head I experienced 9 inspections
@Ofstednews
Each time the process was rigorous but fair. The dread of a visit was always present & the actuality was utterly exhausting. Please
#CancelTheLetter
as we recover - in favour of learning from our schools
@Amanda_spielman
Thank you.
Teachers have provided consistent quiet professional support for children and their communities throughout
#COVID19
Your presence in our children’s lives at this time will be remembered and treasured. Thank you colleagues
@CharteredColl
As we approach the half term holiday I have nothing but admiration for the hard work and commitment of our profession. On behalf of our children and young people - thank you so much
@CharteredColl
Your hopes and worries for tomorrow are real for you. Whatever happens, please know this is the same for everyone else you meet on the first full day back. Do your best with the warmest smile you can feel and please know that is good enough. Thank you
@CharteredColl
This is a significant day. Never before has our profession been asked to do so much. We continue to advocate on your behalf and to support your teaching & leadership.

"[teachers] did not break the rules. Even when the guidance was unclear they did not break the rules. Suggesting otherwise is naïve and wrong."
@AlisonMPeacock
responds to claims about teachers drinking in staff rooms.
For those working in schools next week supporting vulnerable children & key workers’ children we thank and salute you. We need to agree a national solution for the summer break. Teaching & childcare are different skills
@CharteredColl
Special thanks to all the support staff in our schools who work incredibly hard to help children, teachers & families. You are amazing 🌈
@CharteredColl
If you are a

in an educational setting today thank you for making this work for our essential workers & their families. Your professionalism & kindness will shine through
#ThankYou
@CharteredColl
Well here we are at the end of another half term. The demands placed on our colleagues are greater than ever. I hope you can enjoy a delightful holiday - you do a brilliant job. Thank you thank you thank you!
@CharteredColl
This has been a long week full of hope, reunion, love. But teaching is a physically demanding role, as well as an intellectual and emotional one. I know you must be tired. Thank you once again for inspiring & supporting others. Enjoy your weekend when it arrives
@CharteredColl
Heard today from yet another headteacher who has been completely broken. She has now left her school and is beginning the process of recovery
#OfstedReform
Change is needed, enabling our brilliant professionals to flourish
@CharteredColl
Williamson: Some teachers didn't do as much in lockdown | Tes My experience has been that teachers have worked tirelessly to support their communities. Threatening our profession with pejorative inspection judgements is unnecessary & unfair.
Thank you to all those school and college staff on the front line today who are helping teaching colleagues. To admin staff welcoming parents, to cleaning & catering teams, site managers & teaching assistants. We salute you all as heroes
