Square Enix announced they will abandon the production of previously greenlit HD games (console games).
The total loss amounts to 22.1 billion yen (~ $140.8 million USD).
Moving forward, they will be more selective in the development process with which IPs to work on.
This decision was made on March 27th, 2024 during a Board of Directors meeting, and the "abandonment" means basically shutting down future games that were in the middle of production or were to be produced.

Just for clarification, obviously this doesn't mean ALL games in production, just dropping some that they determined potentially might not yield the profit they expect given the budget that will go into developing these games in its entirety.
The loss is not necessarily a bad…

I can't tell if this is good or bad news. Were these IPs projected to be launch to a loss? It's kind of sad to hear but understandable because Square always has a bad record with games that aren't established IPs, even if they were well received.
@Destropher
I think it’s not necessarily a bad thing because they rather not lose potential money developing games that might not generate a profit, so it’s a smart move in a sense, a calculated risk hedge.

Sounds like we can expect far less new IP and smaller scale titles, with a much greater emphasis on Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Kingdom Hearts, possibly Mana too, i.e. their more well known franchises.
