a lot of people in this thread who think "there is no ethical consumption under capitalism" is a free pass to be as unethical as they like. like that phrase is not permission to say 'fuck it. its all unethical so i should lean into the bad stuff'. stop reading it like that.
Does Chick-fil-A not have the same anti-LGBTQ reputation anymore? Anecdotally, young people (Gen Z) keep casually announcing that they eat there and it’s jarring to my aging millennial ears.
@Winterflan
Supposedly Chick-fil-A stopped the anti-LGBTQ donations a couple years ago, at least when I last looked into it, not sure what the situation is now
@Winterflan
Alot of people take sentiments that are meant to rile you up and get you to cause a change and just say "i guess it doesn't matter what i do when im just one person" but since like alot of people think that their combined feelings become indifference towards the issue😭😭😭
@Winterflan
I think the disconnect comes from the fact that way more fast food places are just cheaper than going grocery shopping. Especially when you live in a place where there are only big named places and no local small businesses anymore.
@Winterflan
It's so funny cause it literally means the opposite.
There is no ethical consumption under capitalism is literally a call to minimize consumerism 💀
@Winterflan
I thought the understanding was, try to mitigate consumption as best you can, but dont feel guilty in you're in situations or circumstances where you cannot afford an ethical alternative
@Winterflan
Kinda unrelated but remember when y.t. leftists were coopting this phrase & using it as an excuse to not support black owned businesses lol
@Winterflan
Not only do they donate money to anti-LGBT, the Kathys actively threatened to pull funding from Berry College if they made their LGBT&allies club official when I attended 2007-2011. It’s not just a knee jerk response, but a calculated goal. No positive rebranding of them for me
@Winterflan
Like a decade ago we were “ok, homophobic chicken, lol” aaaaaand then we learned exactly what awful shit was being done with that money and i will fuckin’ go to Popeyes instead.
@Winterflan
these people are directly & in so many words telling you to your face that they do believe consumption is unethical but they do as much as they can anyway because they care more about their treats than about doing the right thing
@Winterflan
Ultimately what all this comes down to is a poor understanding of how franchising works I think. Chick-fil-A as a company doesn't sell chicken, it sells real estate and marketing packages. Homophobic donors receive very very little of the 5 dollars I spend on my sandwich.
@Winterflan
a lot of (younger, especially) leftists don't really get the whole collectivism and community action thing, and take a small personal sacrifice as an affront to their very being
