I’ve lived in Minnesota for 17 years and I still don’t understand the reluctance to turn on the heat when it gets cold in the fall. Do you get a badge or something if you hold out?

@WentRogue Throw an extra blanket on the bed, wear warmer pj's and sleep with the windows open (or keep them cracked until just before bedtime), get that nice fresh night air through the room. Put on a sweater, save a few dollars on the heating bill.

@thatmags I turn the heat wayyyy down at night. During the day I’m typically not in bed, though.

@WentRogue If I look at the thermostat before November my father’s ghost will appear to tell me to put on a sweater, and for good measure will wonder why every light in this house is turned on.

@TanaHargest The lights on is a thing I battle in my own household every day…WHY is the light on in the dining room when we are sitting in the living room?

@TheMadjai Yeah. I do shudder to think what the bills will be this winter but I am also not going to shiver inside my house if I can help it. 🤷🏻‍♀️

@WentRogue I mean, yes, plus the cost savings, but it also helps with temperature habituation.

@BreeMinneapolis Our gas bills are not very high but also I have Reynaud’s and THREE I don’t get using the calendar rather than the thermometer to guide me

@WentRogue Yes. The MN Strength Badge™️ I still fight my husband on this. I think @dbrauer did a thread on this last year! My rule is the same as my dad's--if you're cold, add a layer before turning on the heat.

@asmaresists @dbrauer I have layers upon layers! And when it’s cold enough for me to turn on the heat, I do. (Which reminds me of that OTHER Minnesotan curiosity: office heat that is an absolute furnace blast. I used to have to bring a change of clothes to work at the U)

@WentRogue It’s called money in the bank account since we get hammered for the next 7 months.

@DavidMichaelOls Do you also not turn on AC when it’s hot out (I usually don’t but I guess it’s a matter of what’s bearable)

@WentRogue Have wondered this as well! I know for some folks there is a financial component to it which I completely understand, but for a vast majority of people who are reluctant it seems to be almost a matter of pride or something????

@bellabee13 Totally a pride thing. Which, if you don’t care in the first place, can’t affect you.

@WentRogue Cost savings, and increasingly, awareness our energy choices and usage have an impact on the planet. I can put on a sweater.

@KimInsley I wear a couple couple of sweaters, a scarf, and warm socks inside. And I turn on the heat if it’s cold. I don’t turn it up very high. Do you also refuse to wear short sleeves until the calendar says it’s ok, even if it’s gotten warm already (there’s that climate change, too!)

@WentRogue The badge is not adding unnecessary emissions during a climate emergency.

@WentRogue My mother would not allow us to turn on the furnace before October 15th. But this is my house and I am sitting at a very comfy 66 degrees....it was 55 when I switched it on.
