The Music Department is an alternate universe where pupils are often unrecognisable from who they are outside of it. The shy become confident. The agitated become calm. The lonely become included. The quiet become heard. And the lost become found. Music reveals the real child.

Music isn’t a 2nd class subject, music teachers aren’t 2nd class teachers, and music isn’t just a nice little extra. Music is core, music is fundamental to a holistic and meaningful education, and music teachers make such a positive and lifelong impact on the lives of so many.

Why do pupils tend to gravitate towards the Music Department before, during, & after school? It’s their physical, mental, & emotional safe space. Music helps them connect with others, & express themselves to/with others in such a unique way. Music nurtures health and well-being.

Children are listening to & making music. They’re dancing. They’re drawing & painting. They’re creating stories. They’re taking photos & videos. Why? Because that’s what makes them happy, helps them cope, create, escape. We don’t need a recovery curriculum. We just need The Arts.

A Music Department is a place to discover the wonders of music. It’s also a place to seek refuge, to be comfortable, to be creative, to be unique, to be silly, to be safe, to be yourself, to be together, to be apart, to be whatever you want. Music Departments are for everybody.

Once you’ve sung in a choir, or played in a band or orchestra, or played in any music ensemble, you’re never the same again. Your ears, your eyes, and your heart are opened up in ways not possible by any other means. Music feeds us, it nourishes us, and it brings us great joy.

Music in every primary school. Music in every secondary school. Music teachers in every primary school. Music teachers in every secondary school. Music ensembles in every primary school. Music ensembles in every secondary school. What a difference this would make to education.

If you’ve ever learnt to play an instrument, you know. If you’ve ever performed in a concert, you know. If you’ve ever gone on a tour or camp, you know. If you’ve ever had a jam at lunchtime, you know. If you’ve ever had a quality Music Ed, you know. You know it’s priceless.

Why do pupils tend to gravitate towards the Music Department before, during, & after school? It’s their physical, mental, & emotional safe space. Music helps them connect with others, & express themselves to/with others in such a unique way. Music nurtures health and well-being.

I love how music reveals another side to children. The child who struggles to focus, yet does in music. The child who rarely talks, yet sings at the top of their lungs in music. The child who lacks confidence, yet performs with gusto in music. Music shines a light on their best.

People never forget being in a band. People never forget being in a choir. People never forget being in an orchestra. You never forget the music, friendships, feelings, concerts, laughter, emotion, or the sense of belonging. There’s nothing like making music with other people.

Schools don’t need to pursue the latest fad, they just need to invest in Music Education.
