Seems like fans would be way more critical of Palworld's monsters if they re-appropriated designs from another franchise. Many are frustrated with Pokémon. But if a company yoinked a smaller company's characters, people would be defending the smaller entity. It's a bad precedent.
@Truegreen7
I was waiting for your take. I've seen plenty of Pokémon fans be critical of Palworld. While I see some clear design parallels, I'm not sure that Palworld did anything wrong. If they did, Pokémon would have sued them by now. They're very protective of their IP.
@sadib100
They changed enough for it to not be copyright infringement. That doesn't mean it isn't wrong. As a person who has analyzed Pokémon designs, I can see all traits that were mixed and matched. Everybody would agree it's scummy if the inspiration was some other franchise. Same here.
@Truegreen7
I honestly think the Pokémon of it all is an easy excuse. The game is fun and people want the easiest excuse possible when pushed on why they’re supporting the game. Really prefer the people being honest and just saying don’t care the games fun at this point
@PM7John
Honesty is good, but I'm not excited by people saying "so what if this game incorporates scummy art practices, it's fun." It's one of those slippery slopes. The same type of people were seething when Pokémon fans were saying "So what if SV is unfinished, its' fun." (1/2)
@Truegreen7
This is really reasonable. The only point of contention I have with people that do shit on Palworld are the ones saying that it’s using AI, which is at best extremely unsubstantiated. I’d rather people continue to harp on the actual problem being plagiarism
@myheadisflat
Yeah the AI stuff is muddying the convo. Because the AI accusations may be false, it leads Palworld fans to believe anything else that is brought against it is false.
@Truegreen7
The game obviously takes inspiration from Pokémon, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Nintendo and GameFreak don't own the rights to a genre or art style.
@DrewLMG
Wasn’t talking about genre and artsyle. I’m alluding to the literal body parts and proportions that were taken from Pokemon, mixed and matched, to create artistically soulless Pals. I have no problem with other monster catching games with similar artstyles. (Look at Nexomon)
@Truegreen7
I hate this discussion in general tbh, I feel both sides of it have been mostly mindless hate and accusations-
I really hope the hype dies down soon because I'm sick of hearing about it honestly-
@Truegreen7
Precisely. If it happened to any other franchise or game, there would be an uproar, but since it's Pokemon... "Lol get over it. Stop reaching. Who cares about the artists? Pokemon sucks now anyway, lol. Don't care, still gonna play it.."
Very annoying, but expected
@Truegreen7
Good point. I understand wanting better games, TPCi seems set on the 3 year gen cycle when given how gen 7, 8 and currently 9 introduce new pokemon mid-gen, the don't need a full new gen every 3 years for products anymore.
Give an extra year or two, and make a better game.
@Truegreen7
I haven't picked it up yet is because I have internal conflict on how I feel about it.
It's just super obvious that while they aren't technically the "same," they ARE "re-designed" Pokémon with new names. But what does one do about that?🤷♂️
I don't care if others play it though.
@Truegreen7
Also: "How dare you to defend the multimillion dollar corporate!"
Which is absolutely not the problem. Theft is theft. Stealing from rich people is still stealing.
@Truegreen7
Another thing I noticed is that the majority of people defending this are gamers. And not actual artists who work on such creature design communities. Interesting
@Truegreen7
The same people clearly stole from hollow knight, a well beloved indie game, and no one seems to care. I think it’s just an easy excuse to point at Pokemon, and use it as a scapegoat.
