@ToastCrust For what it's worth I'm convinced there's an intentional effort by bad faith actors to drive the discussions that way specifically to *censor* the healthy discussions. The effort isn't needed anymore, the fire just fuels itself.

@ToastCrust Squeenix had this phase of wanting to try and localize characters' weird speech tics in games like World of Final Fantasy and Seiken Densetsu 3 and it was *the worst*

@ToastCrust Plain mistranslations from underpaid and under-skilled people who innocently misunderstood the language is a more pernicious problem in the JP media sphere than anything "culture war" related, but you'll never hear the outrage about that

@ToastCrust I see people comment on normal translation mistakes all the time and its mostly never addressed. Do you know how much wrong stuff is in the Yen version of Re Zero for example? People bring it up with every new release but Yen is radio silent.

@ToastCrust I like to talk about old anime where the original scripts were basically tossed out in favor of the directors interests and games where tons of content was cut or unbalanced for greedy reasons but people think "bad localization" means "Rewriting bigoted dialog" or "Less sex"

@ToastCrust I feel like it's pretty clear what's good and what's bad. any change to the meaning of a scene is bad, full stop. any change to the personality of a character is bad, full stop. any reddit memes added where the original was a simple joke or wordplay is bad, full stop. 🤷

@ToastCrust ^This, I can be critical of localization and have concerns about censorship and changing context but I like to believe some people do localization in good faith. But the well has been absolutely poisoned by people who are only mad that the translation is "woke".

@ToastCrust yes! this drives me nuts! the gamergate bros operate in such bad faith that it's impossible to voice an opinion that aligns with what they (loudly profess to) believe for fear of being mistaken for one of them. The Last Jedi all over again.
