Representation is everything. I will stand by this till the day I die.
The most heartbreaking thing to me about wrestling promotions not giving opportunity to black, queer, & women talent is that we can make REAL CHANGE. How can we do that if we’re not given a platform? Thread⬇️
Worldwide. People of all shapes, and sizes, who come from different walks of life GIVE UP on their dreams because, they don’t believe they can succeed.
They think: “If others ‘like me’ aren’t being pushed, or showcased because of who they are....what makes you think I would?”
Thoughts like these PLAGUED me growing up. All I ever wanted to do was wrestle, but I was ready to force myself to a college degree, because I’d lost hope. I was a kid who just watched WWE. I didn’t know anything else! But, when I found out LGBTQ wrestlers existed?? I cried
Discovering that LGBTQ talent existed, BLACK LGBTQ talent, that were KILLING IT? Changed everything for me. It gave me just the push of motivation I needed to tell myself “I’ve only got ONE life to live... and I’m going to spend it changing the game.”
Having a diverse roster on your shows, even though it SHOULD be happening without explanation, needs to be the way things happen going forward. There’s an opportunity to bring NEW audiences to our sport. They feel more comfortable KNOWING there’s people like them they can watch-
-and connect to. In addition to that, then they’ll want to invite their FRIENDS, and continue to come back! Everyone’s happy! Right?
A lot of people are preaching BLM, and doing their yearly “pride activism” but MY question is.....what will follow in the months to come?
Seriously, I’m thankful for everyone that has been advocating for us, and are constantly making that noise...but when shows start coming around, will you stand up for us then? Will you call out promoters who rarely give new people like us opportunity?
If your roster is mostly cis white men, and the audiences you draw are mostly cis white men....how many lives are you changing? What’s the point of me being a wrestler if I can’t use my talent to prove there ARE no limits to what you can achieve? My differences are my strengths.
If we want REAL CHANGE, the platform has to expand. We have to hold talent, & promoters accountable. Different people need to be given the chance to shine, because you never know what child will watch, and be inspired to chase their dreams because of it.
