Can’t forget my old coworker showed me how he found missing assets that you could ping but couldn’t physically find and I’ll never forget.
He used to use the desktops internal speaker to play music out of it and walk around and find it. 🤯 Seriously best trick ever.
@AlwaysCoding
They were windows domain joined devices in an office that had over 10k workstations in it not counting telecommuters so machines would go “missing” on asset audits and we were tasked with recovering them.
You could narrow it down by vlan to at least get what floor it’s on
@TechEmiiily
I remember doing this back in the day with a bunch of solaris workstations where they weren't labelled, so we'd log in, dump a sound to /dev/audio, then find and label the machine on the front
@passingthehash
Did anyone ever turn it off when you were looking for it because they thought it was haunted?
(The user seriously said they thought it was haunted….)
@TechEmiiily
We did this when I worked at DailmerChrysler during their Windows XP migration (*to* XP, I'm that old) and there were still some PCs that we had on the list and never found. 😬
@TechEmiiily
The best one ever was a server that was in what had been a closet. Door and frame removed. Dry walled in. Painted. Was just a wall. Finally found it with a physical trace of the Cat5 wire.
