I realize that Providence fans aren’t happy with the sequence of events but Kim English is a high upside hire if this finalizes.
I had the opportunity to call a George Mason game this season and came away extremely impressed with how he handled his team and his in game ability.…
Providence is in discussions with George Mason coach Kim English, per source. Deal is not done, but trending that way as English has emerged as the primary target for the Friars.
English is a Maryland native, played in NBA, also played prep school ball in New England.

Thanks for the insight! How would you compare his offensive style to Cooley’s? English’s seems more up-tempo with more ball movement while Ed’s offense took the air out of the ball at times.
@P_Shels
English came up under Colorado’s Tad Boyle and Tennessee’s Rick Barnes (former Friar).
Both are terrific defensive coaches and focus on that end first.
He’s proven he can get recruits (he was signing Top 100 players at George Mason), and lets those guys make plays.
@T_Oglesby22
Terrance, thank you for the insight. Completely agree that it’s a great hire. But why is no one giving me credit for breaking the news first?
@T_Oglesby22
Maybe he’s a rising star, but is there not an argument to be had that putting him in THIS BE with THESE coaches while English is still so green is not a recipe for success?

@pcbb1917
If the first thing Kim English says in his intro press conference is no more gray jersies and the retro blacks will be the primary unis, the fan base will absolutely erupt
@T_Oglesby22
Yes. We are finally getting a basketball coach and true mentor of the game. Cooley was always more of an ambassador/motivator than a basketball coach…….It’s a lot more Ed Cooley reaching HIS ceiling than Providence reaching its own.
@T_Oglesby22
Mizzou fans were calling for him last season (obviously we lucked out and hit the proverbial jackpot with Dennis Gates) and think he has tremendous upside as a head coach. Providence may actually come out ahead in this, when it is all said and done.
@T_Oglesby22
Good feedback. What made Cooley so successful at
#pcbb
was his ability to recruit. He got quality talent throughout his tenure. If the new coach can’t recruit in a similar way he will not be successful.
