I would say, because I’m in a similar situation, that you don’t have to fake anything. Celebrate the holiday properly and with the proper reverence, but don’t lie and say you always have. It’s a good holiday that can, if treated properly, bring people together
@RealLathan
Yeah, I don’t care if others celebrate it, but it seems weird to just celebrate it now all of a sudden when it’s not something that happened recently or anything.
@RealLathan
I for one don't mind it being celebrated or a holiday but all my life I have never once heard anybody that I know say anything about this day. It's sad that a political party is using it just to look good because that is all this is in my opinion
@RealLathan
That's what happens when people aren't taught complete, accurate and comprehensive U.S. history. There are too many U.S. adults that are just learning about Juneteenth because it wasn't included in their U.S. history books and it wasn't taught in most schools.
@RealLathan
We celebrate Martin Luther King Jr's birthday. Even though the current attitude of the black community seems to have thrown all of his teaching out the window. I don't mind Juneteenth. A lot of good White folks died to bring it about. I'm a Fan.
@RealLathan
I get it. But, it's a new holiday and maybe that represents an opportunity for us to create something positive. Ending slavery was one of USA's biggest accomplishments - we should figure out how to celebrate this & honor the sacrifices of all, black & white, that made it happen.
@RealLathan
Growing up in Dallas our family didn’t celebrate it then. We were just aware of it. All the sudden in 2020 everyone wants to ride the wave. To each is own.
@RealLathan
I’m going to make it a raise-awareness holiday, like Memorial Day. Remember those who are still waiting for the word they’re free, like the massive numbers of women and children being trafficked across our border.
No one can change the past, but we could stop that tragedy now.
@RealLathan
There is enough US history that many are sure to miss or forget some portion of it. 100% of Americans are not perfect history machines nor will they ever be.
When every day is a national holiday, someone will complain at the person who is not celebrating the holiday du jour.
