I think the biggest problem is that designers tend to get so caught up in reconciling the front and back silhouettes that they forget one of the core principles of 2D character design.
Screw factual accuracy. If it looks weird, cheat until it doesn't.
@Rafaknight_rk
this is what happens when you make a character have to have a silhouette at all times
i mean sonic quite literally only has 3 head quills lmao. it’s written on his character sheet too
@Rafaknight_rk
I understand now that they did that probably because it's easier to animate. But I've seen plenty of Sonic animations by now that don't do this and look amazing while Sonic X looks terrible most of the time. Not to put blame on the animators. They had no time or staff.
@Rafaknight_rk
I think you're not really giving them credit by saying that. I don't think it's because they didn't know how to draw them, I think it was a choice to make the animation easier. Would you wanna draw all of those quills for every frame of everytime they're facing away?
@Rafaknight_rk
It's accurate though. I think what makes it jarring is that we're always used to seeing stiff 3D models of him from the back. 2D is just gonna look different by default because it's flat lol

What bothers me Is that they can draw Super Sonic back quills perfectly, and there Is in fact a scene when Sonic destransform from Super and we can see how it goes from properly having 5 quills to 3.
