I do not understand people who publicly bash nurses because they got a bruise from an IV or that a blood draw hurt….you got poked with a needle, it sucks we know but the fact that it didn’t feel great doesn’t mean we are shitty at our jobs

We didn’t grow the veins we’re sticking either sometimes we miss or they blow because they’re fragile I have fragile veins & expectations are I’m going to be stuck more than once for IVs or lab draws

I tell my patients the process of a blood draw. I even draw pictures. I show them how small a target it is and we dont have xray vision. Usually after i explain it, pts gain a new respect for the skill it takes to draw blood at all. 😊

About the only time I will gripe about a bruise from a blood draw is if they go fishing for the vein and I end up with a huge bruise that extends beyond the elbow.

You never hear them criticize their surgeon for the incisional pain from a scalpel. Sometimes healing involves getting stuck w pointy things. The result is often worth temporary discomfort.

As a frequent flyer at my hospital, and I tell you that my veins are tricky, please call the nurse that can hit a vein the first time with no lidocaine. I love y’all, but I’ve been a pincushion and if I can get an IV without repeated pain, it helps my brain learn that it’s okay.
