My students don't believe me when I tell them this until they take their first exam with me. Among other tactics, it's amazing what adding "D) All of the above, and E) None of the above" to every multi-choice item will do - and before you comment, I use multi-method exams.

I would suggest that memorization is learning, but that sometimes we learn the wrong things, concepts or procedures.
Now memorization is not readingβ¦but you have to memorize the graphemes-phonemes correspondences (gradually)before you can become a proficient reader.
