The photographer reports an encounter with a band of Pashtun tribesmen on the road between Rawalpindi and Baramula. "Are you going into Kashmir?" she asked them.
"Why not?" they said. "We are all Muslims. We are going to help our Muslim brothers in Kashmir". ["Half-way to freedom" by Margaret Bourke-White, p-161].
On 22nd October 1947 , thousands of Pashtun tribesmen entered Kashmir from Pakistan, in response to the genocide of Muslims
Kashmir, 1948:
"The corpses of Muslim leaders lying on the ground after they had been stabbed to death and hacked to pieces by Hindu Dogras. The town was eventually captured by Pathans."
