originally the show was just unapologetically positive, focusing on spongebob's happiness more than anything imo
then seasons 2 and 3 came around and more often painted spongebob as naive, sympathizing with everyone else instead

I think I t was probably really relatable for kids in a way.
SpongeBob is a metaphor for children. Happy for seemingly no reason at all, laughing and finding amusement in silly things, even things that other people complain about. Often around broken people (parents/adults).
